What about all the people whose policies were canceled or had fire protections removed before the fire broke out?
Home insurers saw the writing on the wall and got to work preemptively removing customer’s fire protections after the unusually dry season. Are those people just screwed? The article implies that the moratorium only counts from 1/7 onwards.
Sounds like more needs to be done.
What can be done, though? California is already in a deficit and the feds clearly don’t give a shit about reimbursing uninsured homeowners. I’m surprised they can even do this.
And to be fair, after the last few fires it should be clear that land isn’t habitable anymore, just like parts of Florida for example. I think the only thing the government could do is bar people from living in disaster zones and, ideally, buy out the land to return it to nature. Realtors are known to lie to people’s faces about this stuff, too, so fighting that would probably help.

In these upcoming trying times I’m proudly flying my NCR flag
