i was considering upgrading my iphone xs 512gb to 13 pro 1tb, but do you think iphone 14 pro 256gb is more worth it?

in my local store, they’re the same price with that storage (meanwhile 14 pro 512gb would be 200 usd more expensive, 14 pro 1tb would be 400 usd more).

i would also like to say that price would be one of the main considerations. my budget is fairly limited since i live in a developing country without any apple stores, so all products are sold by authorised resellers (which significantly inflate the price).

thank you in advance for your advices!

The iPhone 13 is a great phone, and the performance difference between the 13 and 14 isn’t huge. I would go with the 1 TB iPhone 13.

I tend to fill up my phone easily but it’s not an issue for me since I have an android with a micro SD card (256 GB for now). However, if I had an iPhone and plan to use for years to come, I would get the extra storage.

duly noted, so future proofing > choosing a newer phone with not so significant difference.

thank you very much for your advice!

Usually a newer phone would equal more future proofing, however its worth noting that iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 have virtually the same SoC.

Depends, if you use a lot of storage or not. I’d say go for the double of how much storage, you are currently using on your XS. But storage is severely overpriced on iPhones, so it is hard to say. If you truly need 1TB, I would go for the 13 Pro. I struggle to fill out 128 GB, but maybe that is just me.

thank you so much for your response!

ah i see, i think i would easily fill above 128gb since i play a lot of games with big storages (genshin, honkai). so maybe 256gb might be not too future proof?

but do you think the new features on 14 pro are making it worth to opt for it instead of the 13 pro? something something dynamic island and whatnot…

eta: fixed the storage detail numbers.

No worries! Could be you would have to manage storage a bit, if you go with 256 GB. Question is, if the savings are worth the time you use on storage management. only you can answer that.

The biggest differences are the Dynamic island and a 48 MP camera sensor. Maybe check out some camera comparisons between the models. I think they are notable upgrades, but not something I would pay a fortune for.

i personally wouldn’t mind saving up 200 usd & more just for storage management haha, considering the average salary in my country is only around 100 usd [cries].

anyways, thank you so much once again for your insight! i would definitely take into consideration the small amount of update from 13 pro to 14 pro and contemplate whether it’s worth the price or not.

1TB is a lot of storage and I think very few people use that much. Do you have a specific reason to need that much? The biggest difference between the two is likely the storage, so make sure it’s the one that you need. While iPhones have a justified reputation for insufficient storage, the minimum/default is the problem. If the smaller storage meets your needs, I’d go for the newer one on the idea it may be supported longer

I got 256GB, which gave me sufficient space to download every free game that seemed remotely interesting and I’ve never come close to running out. However I’ve never even tried most so really ought to clean up

Other big usages of storage tend to be:

    — photos/videos. I don’t edit videos and my photos are in iCloud with just thumbnails. What are your needs here?

    – music. I stream, rather than own, so not much here. Which do you do?

My wife and I upgraded from X and XS to 13 Pro when it released. Both phones holds up amazingly well. Only new feature I’m envious about is the dynamic island but it’s hardly a feature I would upgrade for.

i see! you touched on the thing that i personally contemplate about when i consider 14 pro at all, which is its dynamic island. thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Whichever phone still being supported by Apple that you can afford the most storage on. Storage size is the biggest thing holding people back on their phones - whether it’s the dreaded “out of space” error or trying to get OS Updates.

So yeah I’d go with the 13 Pro you’re looking at. 13 Pro is plenty fast, has great cameras, and with that space you’ll never run out of space.

I upgraded last year from the XS to the 14 (didn’t go for the pro as the photos are good enough for my uses on the regular phones). Loved it ever since. I’m a fairly long term owner though, went from the 6s plus to the XS.

Update my watch series 1 to the 7 around the same time.

i see, maybe i can get 14 instead of 14 pro and get bigger storage too then! thank you so much for your insight!

i’m kinda a long term user as well, from 7 to xs and then just now planning to switch hehe. and even then, my xs still feels brand new and buttery smooth too — just the battery and signal problem is the downside.

Having repurposed my XS as my business phone for now, it feels almost brand new again now I’ve reset it and only keep a few business specific apps on there. I was charging it twice a day while it was being used as my daily driver, but since the switchover I’m having to charge it twice a week! So it may simply be too many apps demanding too much system time.

omg twice a week only? that’s amazing! i guess you’re right with that, especially since i’m practically glued to my phone haha.

Then you may as well get the 13 Pro as it’s a better phone than the regular 14.

The 14 has the chip of the 13 Pro, and a worse screen. The 14 doesn’t have the high refresh rate (trust me, this makes the experience so much better) and the regular 14 still has the notch just like the 13 Pro.

The only reason anyone would get the regular 14 over the 13 Pro is because 14 is 1 more than 13.
