I’m limiting my Google usage to the best of my ability. Monopolies always lead to a huge decrease in quality as shown by the likes of Reddit and so on. I will appreciate the help. I solely walk or use public transport if that matters. And I live in Germany. :)
https://organicmaps.app uses Open Street Map data, and I prefer its UI over OsmAnd
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also contribute to OSM mapping with something like https://streetcomplete.app :)
Adding new business through Organic Maps works well too, for those who also contribute to OSM.
I use OsmAnd for Android. I pay yearly for some extra features. I mainly use it for hiking and 4wheeling but it’s street navigation is pretty accurate.
OSMAnd. I love the downloadable mapsets and screen configurability
Yeah OsmAnd~ has a lot of cool features like path tracking, and I find when I’m out hiking or in a park it has more accurate and available trail information than google does(though it’s still not perfect and still more of a supplement). Navigating isnt quite as good as google because of a lack of traffic data, and it’s ui is a little complex, but it works fully off line.
I think your only choices would be OpenStreetMap or TomTomGo I think it’s called.
btw for your information, asklemmy is Lemmy’s equivalent to askreddit (not a support chat haha). if you want more android specific help, visit the Android Lemmy or the Google Lemmy
I like OpenStreetMap, there are a few clients on F Droid
Sygic has worked well for me.
Organic maps is great ! Public transportation routes are limited in my country though
I can recommend the app called Waze if it is available in your area
Edit Sorry, ignore this. Google own Waze as mentioned below.
Google owns Waze
I’ve been slowly switching away from google products the past year or so. Switched from chrome to firefox, and google search to duckduckgo, but maps is one I couldn’t give up. It’s just better than all other competitors IMO.
The bit that gets me is Android Auto. I want to de-google, but MirrorLink is dead and I’m not buying an iPhone.
Organic Maps! Its based on OpenStreetMaps, open source, has a clean interface :)
