Bit of a simple question: Some people on lemmy are still posting stuff from youtube, xitter and the like.
Have you gone full fediverse yet or how far are you?
- traded reddit for lemmy/kbin
- xitter for mastodon
- discord for matrix
- youtube for peertube
Obviously I also mean other alternatives. Which ones do you use and why?
Disclaimer: this question is me asking genuinely but also trying to make it fun by arbitrary ranking/escalating it. Not trying to say one is better than the others.

No, sepia search sucks a lot in my opinion. We need to work on that. But if you have web dev experience, feel free to help with that. :) and you‘re totally correct with the app as well.

I‘m not sure if I understand you correctly.
I know there is gitlab.com, the commercial site and then there is the open source gitlab you can self host, right?
Working on the code and being a contributor to big open source projects is quite the thing for your cv. I don’t see how a „normal“ open source project could do anything for you except look great on your cv. Because thats the point. Open source is not someone who has to be thankful to you. It is like working on the church in your small town. People work together on it or donate to make it possible.
The „i only give if i get back“ is kind of the reason we‘re in megacorp dystopian hellscape rn.

Anyone here tried Matrix and Discord?
Is Matrix even close to be as good? I want to do the switch, but there’s no way I convince any of my friends, if it’s not at least a little better at something.
I use matrix exclusively since a month ago. Works pretty much the same, not ad polished but you can bridge nearly anything to matrix. Whatsapp, Discord, Telegram, Signal etc. i highly suggest you check it out.
Just to understand bridges:
Is it possible for me if, let’s say, I bridged Messenger, WhatsApp and Discord into Matrix, that I could write to anyone from that app only via bridges?
Or how does it work?
Exactly that. One app, all chats.
Uninstalled X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit apps; installed Boost for Lemmy, Mastodon. Would be cool to try Matrix instead of Discord if the experience is the same. But my friends wouldn’t switch based on ideology. 😑
Two things: the experience wont be the exact same because matrix is not a discord clone. It will be a mix of whatsapp, discord, fb messenger and imessage because its a drop in replacement for all of those.
Your friends dont need to switch. You can bridge all these services to matrix and have it all in one app. Thats the fun.
Very late reply, sorry…
I believe I tried to do that whole bridging thing but it was largely unsuccessful. Like, the bridges that were available didn’t support certain things, like voice chat, or posting images, or what have you. At least I think Discord is better for talking. Facebook Messenger really makes me hurl.
No problem.
I can see how one would struggle to use these bridges. They‘re not polished yet. Have you donated to the maker yet? Because people keep comparing stuff that people make for free in their free time to multi million dollar priducts.
We should all either put in work or money before we allow ourselves to judge these apps. I personally spend 1% of my income additionally to helping the development.
Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean Discord is better than Matrix for talking. I meant it’s better than Facebook Messenger for talking. I was judging Messenger, not Matrix. 😅 I am definitely one to use and support free software where I can, even if commercial products are more polished. As long as all the functionality is there, I’m good. But in this case I couldn’t get all the functionality I needed/wanted, so I just kind of gave up on it… 😬
I understood that. Sorry if that wasnt clear.
What I‘m saying is please (who can) consider asking and paying people for implementing this stuff.
For example: voice chat in discord (or any) bridges isnt implemented because it is a lot of work but it is doable.
Consider making a gofundme for paying someone to do it if you cant afford it yourself.
One reason why open source is far behind prorietary stuff (foss can be commercial, see nextcloud) is because people keep thinking anything in life is actually free.
There is no such thing as free lunch. If you‘re getting free software it is because someone donated their time to make it.
In case of discord: make an issue on the mautrix bridges for example and add a financial incentive if you can so people can afford to make this for you. Good luck :)
