Unlucky, sold my RTX 3080 for a Radeon 7800 XT because of superior Linux support. Would’ve loved to have helped.
I’ve been thinking of going amd for a while now for when i switch to Linux. Hows the 7800 perform? I was looking at a 7600xt cause thats what in my price range.
I own two 7800 XTs and a 7900 XTX, they all perform great on linux, I’m very happy with AMD this generation.
did you get any problem with it, like people complain about when using with windows? i own a 4070 and im not sure if i should switch or not, i yet to full transition to linux but im daily using mint
One of the 7800 XTXs is actually in use on a Windows 10 system atm, but I’ve only been using that one for about a week now. I own the 7900 XTX since launch and it’s been pretty much flawless since about two months after launch.
i actually don’t care that much about windows and i’m trying to fully transition to linux rn. i have not got any problem with 4070 yet and i’m just thinking about it.
Yeah, my answer was worded badly. The 7900 XTX is in use on a Linux system since day 1 and the experience is flawless now.
i think imma keep the 4070 for now. i didn’t saw any hiccups and i don’t want to deal with changing gpus. my next gpu is gonna be top of the line amd in future tho
It performs as expected, that is to say similar to an RTX 3080, so it wasn’t really an upgrade performance-wise (RT performance is probably even a bit worse), but Nvidia drivers caused tons of issues combined with Wayland and certain games when I tried it, so the switch was definitely worth it for me. It’s quite a bit more efficient though in terms of power draw and the model I got (PowerColor Hellhound) has a great cooler that that’s very quiet even under high load.
It’s pretty good with somewhat recent kernels, although I started experiencing an odd issue starting with kernel 6.7 (at least combined with KDE Plasma and VRR) that I reported here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3268. Apart from that I’m very satisfied. I’d imagine a 7600 XT would work just as well.
Thats good to hear. Ive been hearing that Nivida has gotten better in Linux but i was still leaning towards amd even if price to performance isnt super great with the card im looking at.
I like to game at 1440 at 144hz so i feel like a 7600xt would work fine but its good to hear a more personal experience especially since you mentioned KDE since I was planning on installing Fedora with KDE.
Depending on where you live a 6700 XT or 6750 XT might be available at a similar price. They only come with 12 GB VRAM and lack RDNA3 features like AV1 encode, but both models are quite a bit faster than a 7600 XT.
They’re both around $330 where I’m at. The performance jump from my 1070ti to 6700xt is around 30% and 38% to a 6750xt. I figure the better option was a newer card with the extra vram. Either one seems to be a good upgrade for me.
Reach out to the folks on the ASUS Linux discord, the vast majority of the zephyrus and rog laptops use Nvidia gpus and I’m sure someone (or maybe multiple someones) would be willing to give beta feedback. Fedora is a fairly popular distro there.
I have an ASUS ROG laptop running Fedora 39 right now. The reason Fedora is popular with these laptops is that the controller that switches between the two graphics cards is native to Fedora. It’s explicitly recommended on the site.
EDIT: It looks like there are more distros that work on ROG laptops since I did it. Pretty cool!
Yeah, Arch (and derivatives) and Fedora are well supported. I did a lot of the kernel platform support and regression testing for the project & the AMD kernel folks while we were getting support ironed out for the 5000 and 6000 series models.
Fedora has good support because that’s what Luke uses for his daily driver machines and Dragonn & others put together the Arch packaging. Those two distros (plus Endeavor and other Arch derivatives) are widely used.
Woah, you were involved in the project! That’s really cool. I’ve had Garuda on my mind for a while, and earlier today I was able to boot it off the live USB with NVIDIA proprietary drivers. That’s a really good sign for me, so I think I’m gonna go for it once I’ve backed things up.
Hybrid Nvidia support should work fine these days. I’ve been using hybrid amd/nvidia machines since about 2020 without too many issues. You’ll need nvidia-dkms, supergfxctl and asusctl and things should mostly just work otherwise.
I’ve been using those on my Fedora install without a hitch. I think I’m gonna go for the Garuda install today after I finish backing things up. Excited!
i have tried fedora 37, 38 and 39 on my rig with 3060ti and couldn’t even run the live os. doubt 40 would work either. nobara works but it’s too buggy for a daily driver and people keep unrecommending it anyway.
Odd. I run Fedora 39 as my daily driver (and Fedora 38 before that) with a 3060 ti and I’ve never had any problems with it on that scale.
My damn overpriced copper missed EVGA 3090 is why I’m trapped in windows. I can’t wait to ditch it.
Wish I could help. Unfortunately the newest cards I have is a laptop 2080, and a desktop 1080ti. Once I can upgrade (likely never at this point) I will be moving to team red.
I can test it tomorrow in an earlier RC Release booting didn´t work. I could boot with blacklistet nouveau. (Hybrid Graphics INtel/Nvidia - MSI Notebook)
