Chromium browsers can install an iCloud Keychain web extensions with macOS Sonoma now
This is good, but a bit late for me. I already moved to Bitwarden for passwords and 2FA. I also don’t expect this to work on my Linux PC.
How is bitwarden for Android? I tried Roboform, and I could almost never get it to autofill passwords on Android. Eventually I just gave up on it completely.
Autofill on Android is just generally terrible. Password fields are basically never recognised.
Works really well in my experience. Every once in awhile something won’t be recognized but no more than on desktop.
I would love this for Firefox
I just exported my iCloud password into a csv file on a MacBook, then imported that file into Firefox.
Agreed - I’m ready to bail on safari but don’t want to use chromium
Most likely won’t happen as Apple doesn’t seem to care about Firefox nowadays. FaceTime on the web is not officially supported on Firefox and they regularly break iCloud on Gecko.
The Keychain integration is done through a Chrome/Edge browser extension developed by Apple. Hopefully they will also port it to Firefox.
Apple has made an iCloud Bookmarks extension for Firefox which is still supported, so hopefully a Keychain extension will follow.
Good to know, Apple’s security and privacy settings are good… giving the fact that they DON’T share any information that they harvest from you, which is a completely different thing than NOT harvesting at all. They like their customers data so much that they embedded encryption tools in their dedicated hardware design.
Regarding the Apple Password Manager, it is a good tool but ultimately I prefer to self host a solution agnostic to a company in which I hold no ability to speak or vote on their future. I recommend Bitwarden and a VPN (Wireguard) to access your vault.
@gabmartini @iwidji I really appreciate bitwarden but I’m not self hosting my own instance. I enjoy the fact that even without the needing to pay it’s multi device at the same time.
If Gabriel is hosting the password file at home e.g. then this requires a VPN to sync your data when out and about.
Port forwarding? Just put nginx in front of it or something, no VPN required.
Why do you need a vpn to access your vault?
Exactly, port forwarding + nginx or your proxy of choice for SSL and you’re done.
need this and apple pay integration for firefox pls.
also whatever happened to that news about firefox and other browsers gearing up for non-safari based versions of ios apps? or did i misremember
iCloud Keychain integration in Sonoma is provided by an Apple developed browser extension, it’s up to Apple to develop one for Firefox.
Mozilla said they were working on a Firefox port to iOS, but I don’t suppose anything will be properly released until Apple opens iOS to third party software sources.
I’ll stick to the Keepass ecosystem in my devices
Good for normal people, I use Bitwarden though and don’t intend on switching. This is a win for the masses however.
This has been the main thing keeping me from switching to keychain full time from Bitwarden. That and password syncing with a spouse
Good to hear for people that are tightly interwoven with Apple’s ecosystem and have been using it, more options is always good. I’ve personally been using 1Password on my Apple devices (which integrates nicely on iOS with Face ID and very well on my 2019 MBP with Touch ID).
I’m a big fan of 1Password also. I make good use of the shared vaults in my family account.
Will this work on only Mac, or can I install the extension on my work laptop Edge browser too? That would be essential for me to be able to use it cross platform.
The extension has been working on Edge and Chrome on Windows for a while. You just need to install iCloud desktop for it.
Dang, that kills my use case since I can only install software on my PC from my org’s internal App Store. Too bad Apple still requires this and it can’t be just the Edge extension.
Apples own is Mac only (well, I’m 99% sure at least), if you want to go cross platform I’d recommend Bitwarden or, like some others here has mentioned, 1Password.
