Summary

President Biden announced a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, effective Wednesday, ending over a year of deadly conflict that killed nearly 3,800 in Lebanon and displaced over 1.2 million.

The deal requires Hezbollah to pull forces 20 miles from Israel’s border, Israeli troop withdrawals within 60 days, and joint patrols by Lebanese forces and UN peacekeepers.

Biden emphasized Israel’s right to self-defense if terms are violated.

France supported implementation efforts, while Iran and Trump’s team were briefed.

Fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza remains unresolved.

Mr. Biden said if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the deal and poses a direct threat to Israel, then Israel retains the right to self-defense.

And if Israel breaks the deal then the Lebanese people have a right to self defense, too.

How much you want to bet Israelis are going to be building houses all up in that 20-mile zone almost immediately?

Is it only young people commenting under this post? Everyone is so skeptical as if Hezbollah and Israel haven’t gone through this numerous times in the past.

Will it last forever? It never has before. Will it dramatically reduce hostilities for a period of time? Very likely.

I’m sure something will happen if they fail to withdraw within the 60 day deadline, right? Just like all the previous deadlines they failed to meet, right?

Doesn’t matter to them because by then if they break the agreement it’ll be Trump’s problem. Biden can take credit for brokering a peace deal before he leaves office to bolster his resume

The hostilities predate Biden, the current conflict would have happened with anyone as president

It’s just a US/Russia proxy war so if the US president took the other side then the conflict would be over as the one side is eliminated just like they’ve been in the rest of the Arab world (though part of that is likely that they fled to Israel)

Oh well that absoves Biden of everything then!

Him allowing Israel to anything they want definitely didn’t do anything to increase hostilities in the area…

There’s a big difference between “everything” and being the reason for a conflict

Your initial statement was just a falsehood that makes it harder for everyone smarter than you to defend Palestinians

Please Mr smarter than everyone explain how him letting Israel do everything they want didn’t contribute. Especially as they’ve been escalating this entire time

                  There you go redefining again

Some of us are old enough to remember Trump’s 2016 campaign where his messaging was to carpet bomb all of the Muslim nations in the Middle East

Others know what nations at war are capable of when the higher power behind them give the green light. We know Biden wasn’t letting Israel do as they please

It’s probably hard to broker any deals longer than that because no one really knows what that orange turd is going to do.

It’s not that the deal will only last 60 days, just that they have 60 days to move everyone back and out of the aggressive range.

Realistically it’s just boilerplate language. It’s 60 days to pack up and go home, which is perfectly fair and reasonable.

Of course in reality this might just be a short reprieve. While both sides might be quiet for the next 60ish days (which is good), they might be right back at it for a variety of reasons, including the change in US leadership.

Relentless genocide including the most dehumanizing actions you could think of, calling themselves “God’s chosen people”, viewing other people as needing to be annihilated or enslaved, the Hannibal Directive, the Samson Option. You know, the standard evil super villain shit.

Good to know you have some boundaries. But Israelis, so just some Jews, are really trying to take over the whole world? You can see how that could come off as kooky, right?
