I generally browse “new” a few times to find new and interesting content, but this also means I will encounter a bunch of things I’m not interested in or simply don’t understand, i.e. a regional community from another country.

I can use the filter option to filter the instance, community or user, but if you navigate to the community you can also hit “block”.

What’s the difference between these two, functionally?

“Block” is a Lemmy feature. Your blocklist is stored in your Lemmy account. If you go to Lemmy on a Web browser, your blocked content will still be blocked. Only communities and users can be blocked, I believe.

“Filter” is a Sync feature. Your filter list is stored in the app, profile per profile I believe. Filtered content won’t be blocked on your Web browser. You can filter whole instances and keywords, along the usual blockable stuff.
