  • I tried MacOS on my work machine for a couple of years, because everyone says how easy is. It never clicked for me. It felt like the short cuts all needed another key. It was also unintuitive for me. Of course that could be because I grew up on Windows. Either way, I did not like it.

Linux is crazy easy to install and really cool that you can run a live USB so easily. It’s also secure, stable, can run on garbage hardware, and has a thousand cool flavors. Intuitive and easy for (Mint, Ubuntu, etc.) common stuff. An absolute minefield to install soooo many things- if they even can work. I just want to double click shit and then run it. Much of that is on Microsoft for making things a challenge on purpose.

Windows gets more intrusive and obnoxious every year, but it runs almost everything I need.

Never really tried iOS. I don’t like the idea of being locked down.

Android can do a lot of cool stuff, but gets more intrusive every year too. So I run that for now.

Some day I’ll probably try some other OS on my phone, but I have less patience and time every day.

At home, I run Linux on one machine, Windows on another, hoping to cut ties with Windows entirely, but probably won’t ever get there.

  • My wife used to get all grumpy with high school kids (and sometimes even adults) trick or treating. I told her, I’m glad to see anyone that still has that spirit and energy. And if they don’t have costumes… They probably can’t afford them. Worst case, they’re doing something better than the trouble they could be up to.

… But fuck those people that take the whole bowl at houses with no one home.

  • I hate the bloatware attached to Android phones, so I went with a pixel 8. Pretty good phone, but the camera was defective. They sent me a refurbished replacement. It died from water damage… from a wet hand. On a phone rated for 30 minutes below 5 feet of water, that was disappointing. The second replacement drops signals all the time. Spotify glitches 5+ times per song. Google won’t give me another replacement.

    Never trust anything refurbished.

  • I was trying to find active users since he took over. But the only numbers I can find are numbers provided by Musk, who is a well known liar.

I know Lemmy and Mastodon are niche communities, and that people put up with a lot of garbage from Big Tech, but I have to believe that a lot of users have left Twitter, or least that usage is down. I also assume bots are way up, because Musk wants his numbers to be up regardless of the source (save for people with an opposing opinion).

Hopefully Musk’s shitty little empire crumbles…soon.

  • Messages went from $.05, to $.10, to $.20 to send and receive. That was in the span of three years. All of the companies said it wasn’t collision. They just happened to arrive upon massive increases separately.

If I recall, one of the CEOs said “We’re raising the prices to save customers money. This way they’ll be an unlimited plan”

The telcos should have been broken up then. Instead we’ve seen even more mergers.

    • Edit: forgot to include the years. This was in the U.S. circa 2005-2008. Telcos have moved onto other sleezy practices now.*

    Seconded.

Dreamcast was solid. Decent games. Sega just had their collective heads up their assess. No one had confidence in their consoles. Genesis was a surprise smash hit…then Sega just spewed out consoles; 32x, Sega CD, mega drive, Saturn… Probably more. In that same time span Nintendo released…N64.

No one wants to buy a console that is outdated in a year or two. That game library is tiny and none of your friends have it.

Build a winner, milk it. Release another winner right as the previous one is winding down. Nintendo has mastered that formula.

  • Not sure what changes, but it’s scary how much Google controls. Even if we just broke off YouTube from them, that would be a big deal.

Ideally we would split their search engine, YouTube, and chrome each into two competing companies. (Google A, Google B, Chrome A, Chrome B, YouTube A, YouTube B)

Because Google has so much power they can make changes that will break search results, websites, and browsers if you don’t accept changes that are beneficial to them.

  • The hardest part of meeting girls is talking to them. It takes guts to put yourself out there and resilience to handle the rejection if it doesn’t go the way you want.

Ask her out. A public option is good. Something she likes. Comics are a good start if that’s her thing.

If she says ‘yes’. On your date:

    • Be very hygienic (shower, clean clothes, brushed teeth, gum)
    • Ask courteous questions and listen. I have yet to meet someone that doesn’t enjoy talking about themselves (yes, I know they exist). This also makes your end of the conversation easier. Favorite music, food, places to visit, hobbies, etc.
    • Have a next place in mind if things are going well, but the comic shop has gotten stale (coffee, dinner, a walk somewhere well lit, etc.). Be open to her suggestions.

If she says ‘No,’ be respectful, and try not to take it to hard. It wasn’t meant to be. Take pride knowing you had the guts to try.

Good luck. Be brave. Be respectful.
