Yes, I use GrapheneOS myself, but just know that it doesn’t make any changes to AOSP other than privacy and security enhancements. Apps can still prevent you from taking screenshots on GrapheneOS.

Apple has already done the same with macOS 10.15 Catalina in 2019. No more kernel extensions = much better kernel-level security
This will become the industry standard

Is there an alternative that isn’t directly tied to an apartheid state committing genocide?
Yeah there are countless alternatives (at least here in Germany, but Germans are obsessed with sparkling water so YMMV depending on where you are). A soda maker ain’t some crazy technology, it’s a CO₂ cylinder, a valve, and something that holds the bottle, in fact, it’s so simple, other comments suggest to just build one yourself: https://lemmy.world/comment/13959890
Just make a couple of Google (or preferably DuckDuckGo) searches for “soda maker” or “sodastream alternative” and I’m sure you’ll find something that suits your needs.

Android doesn’t have any long term support branches for older versions of the mobile OS.
It was clear they’d likely provide 5 years of OS updates for 6th/7th gen Pixels rather than 3 from the start. Documentation clearly hinted at it by saying they’d provide 5 years of security AND features updates.
GrapheneOS would have received feature updates for the full duration of 5 years anyway, since they don’t separate feature updates from security updates.
@oranki@lemmy.world’s hydroxide-push is very useful if you want to get Proton Mail notifications via ntfy, so you don’t have to use Google Play Services/Firebase Cloud Messaging on degoogled Android systems like GrapheneOS
Also check out the post in !unifiedpush@lemmy.dbzer0.com about it: https://lemmy.world/post/17087912
Just found a post on !pcmasterrace@lemmy.world that sums this up pretty well: https://lemmy.ca/post/26083247
If you’re ok with using macOS, definitely go with a MacBook Pro. Otherwise, I’d pick a Framework laptop. If you really need a strong GPU, the Framework 16 is perfect for you. They’re very upgradable and repairable, only the CPU is soldered in and can’t be swapped.
Most people don’t care about the same things you care about.
Oh I do believe that most people absolutely fucking hate Edge and want to get rid of it. I’m also pretty sure that people aren’t interested in creating an account that has basically no benefits, while just being annoying as fuck.
I also care about things like tpm support and kernel signing
UEFI secure boot and the TPM API are fundamentally broken and provide nothing more than an illusion of security. If you want to see what a proper secure boot setup looks like, take a look at Android Verified Boot with an actual hardware secure element (e.g. the Google Titan M2). UEFI secure boot only exists to comply with standards and certifications written by people who know nothing about security.
I used Rufus to bypass tpm and web login support with 2 checkboxes.
Creating Windows installation media in general is a great topic, why the actual fuck does Microsoft not provide a bootloader in their ISO images?!? I recently wanted to create a Windows 11 install USB drive, but I didn’t have any working Windows installation at that time. I can’t create a Windows USB from macOS or Linux, because I need to use Microsoft’s stupid Media Creation Tool, which, guess what, only works on Windows. I need Windows in order to install fucking Windows. This is so insanely stupid.
but Windows had the edge on gaming and simplicity
I’m sorry, but no. Absolutely not.
You want to install Windows without giving up all of your personal information to a greedy corporation that will sell it or use it to train AI? Too bad, gotta figure out how to launch the command line during the OOBE process (it’s Shift + F10
btw) and figure out which command to enter (btw it’s oobe\bypassnro
), then restart your PC to reload the OOBE, just so you can avoid the absolutely brain-dead account requirement. Simple, right?
You want to stop Windows from using Edge by default? Very simple, just download this tool from GitHub.
You want to get rid of Microsoft Edge? Just a couple of PowerShell commands. Very simple, very intuitive, very user-friendly, right?
You want to do anything that you as an end user aren’t meant to do? Have fun and dive into regedit
, while always having to fear that you might brick your system.
You want to disable Recall/Copilot/whatever they call their AI garbage? Too bad, you can’t. It’s baked into the system specifically in a way that makes it impossible to remove. What a fucking simple and intuitive operating system. Always works like a charm and lets me do whatever I want.
Windows users will do everything, including using a soon unsupported and insecure, outdated version of this proprietary garbage, instead of just switching to a better OS
Damn, ok that’s really weird. Have you tried asking in the Universal Blue/Bazzite forum? https://universal-blue.discourse.group/
You forgot the /s
Ooh, I see, a true BSD user!
HDR support is there in KDE Plasma 6, works flawlessly for me
Can’t say that I’m surprised. Both are pro-RuSSian trolls and just absolute morons in general, but it’s still pretty interesting, because the AfD absolutely hates EVs and prefers RuSSian oil imports. I honestly think that Musk just isn’t aware of their EV politics, and it makes all of this so much funnier 😂
