Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•IRS says churches can endorse political candidates in reversal of decades-long precedentEnglish6·6 days agoPossible good side effect is churches visibly promoting candidates you dislike so you can actively avoid them. I’m not a church guy at all but having it be obvious which ones are the true cranks and which ones are more middle of the road, or the rare lefty churches seems like a silver lining here.
I don’t think this will change much internally, churches are heavily political and the no endorsing candidates law was seldom, if ever, enforced.
Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Unless users take action, Android will let Gemini access third-party appsEnglish1·6 days agoMine apparently didn’t, but it’s an older Samsung. Like, micro-USB era. I’d be surprised if Google ever autoinstalls Gemini because of the age.
I’d be pretty impressed if salamanders readily incorporated environmental transposons into their genome. Don’t octopuses rewrite their genetics on the fly though? I think I remember reading something about that years ago

Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Anyone else not understand the hate for hydrogen peroxide?English2·21 days agoThanks, that’s a load off my mind. It doesn’t really sound true but the bubbling action of peroxide always seemed a little ominous. Easy to see how this rumor started, it could be generations old.
Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Anyone else not understand the hate for hydrogen peroxide?English52·22 days agoNot sure if this is true but someone once told me that using hydrogen peroxide on wounds of a certain size might lead to a bubble of gas appearing in the bloodstream, which would be undesirable. I dunno, I rinse my mouth with diluted h2o2 occasionally and might put it on a small scrape but I’m a little leery after hearing that. Also the “cauterizing” effect seems like it might slow healing or cause a more notable scar.

Can confirm rubbing alcohol can improve your experience with failing phone charge port. I got to the point with one where it wouldn’t charge unless I applied a minuscule amount of alcohol around the metal prong in the phone with a shaved down toothpick before plugging it in. This tip is mentioned exclusively for those trying to extend the life of an end-stage phone and I take no responsibility for any fires or harm to the phone.
That said, there were never any problems when I did it and it extended the phone’s life maybe 8 months, and after a few months it didn’t even need the alcohol. Maybe it improves conductivity or used the charger head to over time clean the phone port. This was a micro-USB charger because I like using 8 year old, $60 phones.
Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The small scale of Lemmy's active user base is never more evident than in the absence of active members in all the sports related communities.English3·2 months agoEasy enough to block the sports communities from your feed if you browse c/all if you dont like them. I say someone set up the sports communities and start posting articles to see if we can get more adoption by the sports folks over here. I dont have the patience for sports but more users is good. Some sports people are obnoxious but some certainly aren’t (Bill Bppurr comes to mind) and userbase growth is needed.

Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto General Discussion@lemmy.world•MFW I figured out who the general audience of Lemmy is.....English3·2 months agoI can’t remember why I blocked them, it was probably like a year ago perhaps when I was having a bad day or something. So I have removed them as a blocked instance because of your kind comment and look forward to reading posts there on my /all feed). Thank you, stranger!
Asidonhopo@lemmy.worldto General Discussion@lemmy.world•MFW I figured out who the general audience of Lemmy is.....English61·3 months agoTook me a while as I’m doing this on a phone but here are my blocked instances with reasons, and for your enjoyment, all my blocked communities (there are considerably fewer than 800 though)
Mostly I block things I have little interest in, foreign languages, nsfw, anime, bands, video games, religions, subcultures I’m not a part of. I generally don’t have any ill will toward them but have no need to see their posts. Some of these I’ve blocked after browsing c/all and seen one post. This blocklist has made c/all pleasantly readable for me. I’ve also got a few dozen users blocked but I’ll I’ll keep that list to myself.

But yeah not surprised it’s still there. Lemmy blocklists should be a thing, would make the new user experience much more endurable. Last I checked I have over 800 communities blocked and dont miss any of them.
