Because I don’t know their situation, their life. I don’t have enough trust that I’ll just take someone at face value from a small subset. Don’t want to get jumped. Don’t want to get taken advantage of.

I wouldn’t do an Internet stranger’s house. But I absolutely would help a friend’s or neighbors if they so asked.

They’re synonymous!

Being japan doesn’t seem like the worst option. They’re still the 4th strongest economy in the world, with some of the lowest homeless rates in the world

Lol. Yeah, we don’t live in an era where information is that repressible anymore–and it ignores how many germans knew they weren’t free

Can and will. If they were smart, they wouldn’t take what they’re told unquestioningly at face value. Fear does not wholly override logic. Overcoming instinct is what makes a human human

Pray tell, why do you think people become nazis then?

It’s the truth. These people wake up, and they choose to hate. They chose ignorance. They willfully and intentionally choose it. We don’t live in the 1700s. Information to disprove themselves is readily available. Or if they had basic critical thinking skills
Pretending it’s just about “stupidity” is how you avoid learning from History
Perhaps I phrased it poorly. But their opinions are only formed because they’re stupid, through extra propaganda and hate. They’re not opinions someone who actually cared about others can have.

… You think nazis aren’t idiots? Lol. I see you don’t have any actual understanding.

10 and 1 simultaneously. I’ll sit down. I’ll talk politics with damn near nazis. But I’ll also understand they’re disgusting, their viewpoints are formed through pure idiocy. It can be simultaneously very informing and infuriating to get an understanding of how they come about their viewpoints. Same applies to much less extreme examples as well

I’m waiting for the boost update to support piefed so I can use it.
We need multiple accounts to connect to more instances due to defederation etc

All it takes is one leader throwing a wrench in the process
Btw self funded insulates from that. You can have a committee run it and it blocks a lot of the politics from mattering for it

Would’ve looked a lot better if you commented that when I hadn’t already

the-store-whose-name-you-seem-too-think-that-no-one-should-say-like-its-fucking-voldemort-or-something,
Believe it or not. Shopping at unethical companies is unethical . I don’t like people advertising for a terrible corp. Especially a fascist corp.

The best ones don’t bother, because collecting fares is expensive and slows everything down
That’s simply untrue. the best public transit system on earth collects fees, and no, it doesn’t slow things down any significant level because it’s just tapping as you walk by

Good transit is always expensive. Where the money comes from can be hidden from the end users, but it is always expensive. If you only look at the fares it might seem that good transit is cheap, but that is just because the costs have been moved elsewhere - a political question that has nothing to do with transit.
At surface value, this seems true. Until you look at the city with the best train system on earth, Tokyo. There, the trains are cheap. The trains are fast, clean, on time. And all of it is without any external funding

The best public transit systems can even make back their money just from low fairs alone due to shear ridership

I get that it’s short hand for that --but I still don’t think it’s good to push people forward to stores with so many moral and economic issues like walmart as the first suggestion.
A simple trucker’s radio is a common item in gas stations and truck stops–not that they’re necessarily better than walmart, but they’re just as common and weren’t put forth as a suggestion

Why is everyone so quick to recommend Walmart? Corpo advertising shouldn’t have a place on lemmy , intentional or not
That’s absolutely insane logic. “Everyone’s doing it, it must be fine, right?” You know how many incredibly cancerous and harmful materials were once in common use by everyone?
