They seemingly wanted to design the entire interface around touchscreen 2-in-1s. If you went in a Microsoft store around the time windows 8 came out, they were leaning really hard into the 2-in-1s. I got a surface pro 3 at that time that I used to take handwritten notes in school, and the windows 8 interface was honestly awesome with that use case. On my desktop PC, though, I held out updating from 7 until windows 10.

For the packet size and fils format issues, it seems like this language feature would be less reliable than bit shifting or masking, given that different implementations may store the bits in a different order or not compactly

Unfortunately many employment agreements in the US are “at will” meaning either party can terminate it immediately at will. In states where this is legal (almost all of them), you’d be hard-pressed to find any company willing to do it any other way.

Don’t be discouraged by the language learning. Most places you can find intensive classes that meet several times a week. It’s also a matter of studying and absorbing as much comprehensible input as possible. Surround yourself with the language like you’re a baby learning everything about the world anew, and you’ll be amazed at how quick you pick things up. Our brains are literally made to learn language, after all :P
