You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Gerrymandering allows politicians to determine election outcomes by changing electoral maps. In most western countries, it's illegal. Gerrymandering is common in the United StatesEnglish
4·3 months agoI’d love to see what the vote would look like if we broke the gerrymandering systems today. Democrats are just now talking about doing their own fuckery to counter republicans, but what if we just “didnt” have them, which side wins?

Games@lemmy.world•Young men are 'playing videogames all day' instead of getting jobs because they can mooch off of free healthcare, claims congressmanEnglish
2·4 months agoPays well too. The price of their morality for a lifetime of pay and free healthcare. Because let’s face it, these idiots get FEHB healthcare for life for being in congress because they made it so. They get a salary AFTER they served too, after Min 5 years, but they get 80% of their salary as part of a pension. Insane nonsense if you stay for 20 years compared to what we get.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•Too many non-working holidays in AmericaEnglish
16·5 months agoMy sleep deprived brain trying to process the 4th thanksgiving. Like, I only get one and this guy gets 4. I’m going to go to sleep now, you should also invest in some commas. :)
Does anyone remember the exit came command? Legit done playing this release, it’s not fun anymore.
Seriously, 20 years from now we’ll all look back at this and go “wow, that was some crazy shit”

Technology@lemmy.world•Russian influence operations expand to BlueSkyEnglish
294·10 months agoOh, good. I was worried we might actually get to keep a platform free of garbage. Whew. Can’t wait for all those conspiracy nuts to join in too!

Seriously, if someone would just off Putin, that’d be great. Let Russia fall into a little civil war as smaller leaders fight amongst themselves for the scraps.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Secure Way to Expose Docker Containers to the Internet?English
1·10 months ago+1 for cloudflare. But I don’t use their tunnel products, I just expose my ports to only their known IPs. With cloudflare you have a nice “free” waf in front with tls that points to a secure(nginx proxy) or unsecured docker container. Audiobookshelf is a great example. Is best to use their dns product too, for easy management of your public facing sites.

Technology@lemmy.world•I still don’t think companies serve you ads based on spying through your microphoneEnglish
161·10 months agoI hate to add to the conspiracy, but I know my eye doctor uses a 3rd party which has sections of their hipaa privacy acceptance which allows them to use your info to sell you ads if you don’t decline. Phreesia, is the 3rd party company. Now add the other apps that track your location… time spent there…
and I know my grocery store does the same when you use the discounts. and worse, they have facial recognition so I can’t even opt out (kroger).
Your issue was likely a combo of that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was the second best thing that happened to you in 2024?English
9·11 months agoMy divorce was the second best thing to happen to me. First was my Ex, informing me she was getting married again 4 more days). I will end up paying 8 months of alimony (maintenance) and no longer owe her anything ever again.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What access points do you use?English
7·11 months ago+1 on this. Though i picked up 2 u7’s. VLAN support, easy to maintain and lets face it, superior function from most retail APs. If you’re a power user, this is the way.

Technology@lemmy.world•TCL TVs will use films made with generative AI to push targeted adsEnglish
4·11 months agoYep. This is the new answer. Either buy a model assured to have jailbreak and replace the stock privacy nightmare; or spend more $$$ on a dumb tv.

Apple@lemmy.world•Apple won't launch a smart ring, says Oura CEO: 'It's hard to do'English
3·1 year agoI’ll take a ring over the smart watch any day. Battery life alone, makes this easier. Drives me nuts to see my coworkers, friends, dates, just looking at their watch as we chat away or work, then complain about so many alerts.
So no, smart rings are not stupid

13·1 year agoThat’s because they are tracking what you watch to place relevant ads. You need more than pihole to stop them

Rokus are relentless

Technology@lemmy.world•“I am still alive”: Users say T-Mobile must pay for killing “lifetime” price lockEnglish
2·1 year agoBefore eSIM, tmobile global data and text in 150 countries was the dream for my 5x trips a year. Now I just pop into the Eu and pick up a prepaid month European esim and spend €20+€15 additional month vs the $200 a year I was spending. Italy even has a deal in the summer now for €15 for 30 days.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandateEnglish
4·1 year agoYeah, that was a typo and my experience is limited towards the AWS side which is also facing this issue. But the numbers are there, some people have been at Amazon for a decade, so 20 months (if they had MY package of 2mos per year). Amazon was throwing everything at new hires, because they were making bank on their work.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandateEnglish
7·1 year agoThey are getting severance when terminated, unless for cause. My comment was, this is how they avoid it by forcing people to quit.

“I don’t travel on potentially doomed subs without these 10 things from amazon, you won’t believe how cheap number 1 is!!”
