Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you have a strong opinion on the death penalty?
1·1 month agoThe death penalty is not an effective punishment, it is a security measure and should only be used if confinement is unsuccessful and the risk is sufficient, which should be a high bar.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some loanwords (originated in another language and usually retains original spelling in equivalent english) for concepts, things, or experiences that English doesnt necessarily have yet?
2·1 month agoI mean, that’s not a uniquely Muslim concept. I think that’s pretty universal, although we don’t have a word for the concept in English. It’s just considered unhygienic.
Unless you mean to say that when someone has used a utensil it is permanently tainted.

To a degree, paying off loans in full actually reduces your credit score. Credit score is purely a score of how juicy you are to lendors. Lendors don’t like people who pay off loans in full because that means you’re not paying them anymore.
To increase your credit score, take on more debt that you can pay off and pay it dutifully every month.
(This is not financial advice)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you never understood the hype for?
1·4 months agoGreat comparison. Just as asking the woman to cover up is ineffective, so is trying to enforce pedestrian safety on the pedestrian side. Much more effective is to prevent the suspect/driver! Glad we came to an agreement.

Even if, I think it’s still a valid comparison as it’s a rate.
I use Yank. I understand some Yanks think Yank only applies to New Englanders. I don’t care, they’re all Yanks.

“Sounds like it is working pretty well to me” when I spend multiple days trying to get Linux working for one purpose (to draw) and am unsuccessful.
This is why “current year is the year of the Linux desktop” is hilarious to anyone who doesn’t use Linux.
