Try earplugs! Even just turning the volume down 70% changes the intensity of words. With earplugs in I could let somebody curse at me to my face and just let it slide. Not really true for an addictive substance like sugar. It changes your whole taste threshold, and leads to more sugar in everything else you eat. For the same reason diet soda is still bad - it has the same dopamine response in the brain and leads to more real sugar consumption than an unsweetened beverage.

Each person gives when they have capacity, and each person receives when they don’t. Strengths and weaknesses cancel out and both are better off together.
