Work Reform@lemmy.world•A Stanford University professor wrote an article about how the grad students going on strike are supposedly extremely selfish people
10·4 months agoI finished my Biochem PhD in 2023 and the only way I survived the 6 years of indentured servitude was by working from 2014 to mid 2017 in the pharmaceutical industry. I saved and invested every penny I could, then moved to Pittsburgh where the $23,500 pre tax stipend went a bit further. Also, graduate student in my department were banned from having any other jobs, and yes it was enforced. One of my cohort had got in serious trouble working at the museum and one had minor issues when they picked up a faculty member while driving Uber.

You want the meowant automatic litterbox that rotates on the x-axis. I paid $300 for mine and my mom’s 2 years ago and it’s been awesome. It’s simple, easy to clean, big enough for my cat, and fits normal grocery store sized plastic bags for collection. It has an app and I didn’t start using it until about a month ago to track my cat’s weight. Before buying any automatic litterbox I would read about the dangers and never buy one that rotates on the y axis or has any possibly of trapping your cat.

2·6 months agoMy Rx580 has basically been on continuously since I bought it in like 2017/18. I used it to mine when I wasn’t gaming until it became unprofitable, then to process sequencing data for my dissertation project while not gaming, and now it’s in my server.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Scientists of Lemmy, how would you standardize or improve cooking recipes?
8·6 months agoI’m an American biochemist, I also never learned the english system because my school transitioned to metric too fast. The mental burden of trying to cook using english units after working all day in the lab using that same part of my brain leads me to just not want to cook 95% of the time. But when I do cook I have optimized processes for my few simple recipes. When I bake I usually use a metric recipe or convert a English one, and optimize it before making a large batch of something.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Budget Homelab UPS Recommendations? (Used or New)English
2·11 months agoIf you live near a college campus, check out their recycling center or campus surplus. Lots of IT departments just toss UPS when they upgrade equipment regardless of battery status. I like to grab APC ones because the battery replacements are easy to find and there’s usually a YouTube video for the exact model with someone refurbing it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why I regret using 23andMe: I gave up my DNA just to find out I’m British | Technology | The GuardianEnglish
16·11 months agoI haven’t found an article yet that can actually articulate the problem with 23 and me right now, and actually did research into it or even read the terms and service. The problem with 23 and me is that they are not maximizing the share holder value of the data they are sitting on. The CEO wants to keep the company in line with the principals they were founded on which is to protect the privacy and data of their customers, while using opt in studies to build data sets that can be studied or sold.
Investors want to enshittify the company, and have been organizing a campaign against to company to try to drive it into liquidation to buy the data, even though the company is profitable. I wouldn’t be surprised is they are funding these weekly omfg 23 and me bad articles.
