  • “We leveraged the fact that many people know about the world and story of the original Final Fantasy VII when we designed the remakes,” Hamaguchi told me during the leadup to Rebirth’s release. “In this title, our general framework follows the original storyline, but at the same time we incorporated elements clearly not included in the original, such as the Whispers and Zack.” This creates a unique opportunity for a remake: uncertainty. “That sort of thrill is very important for this title as a piece of entertainment.”

We have a name for that, “reboot”. Or more cynically, “cash grab”

Since the title gives nothing away:

This is an extensive article by Ed Zitron on how the technology that you’re required to interact with every day has become explicitly user hostile. It’s a 42 minute read, but IMO worth reading at least the first section.

Ed Zitron also has an excellent podcast on the topic of tech companies being awful called “Better Offline”

  • I worked on software at one point that had at it’s core a number of “modes” that it switched between. It was, at the time, in the process of migrating from enums and switch/case trees to an inheritance based system.

In practice this meant there was a single instance of “Mode” for each mode which used pointer equality to switch/case on modes like an enum.

To add a new mode (that did nothing) I think I had to change about 6 different places.

How about MNT Reform or it’s Pocket little brother?

    They get you

    • Full mechanical keyboards, ortholinear if you’re into that
    • Modern components
    • HIGHLY modular and repairable - their main thrust is making messing with your internals accessible
    • No sticky goo coating
    • Cyberdeck aesthetics (esp the Pocket reform)

    They do NOT get you

    • Low price - you didn’t mention a budget constraint
    • Thin. They are chunky kids, though certainly the Pocket reform has a reasonably portable profile

  • Australia has ABC Vote Compass, but it has some oddities based on issues with our political/media landscape:

    • it only places you relative to the three top parties
    • all the questions are specific election wedge issues (mostly between the top two parties) rather than broader ideological questions, and so it only updates in the run up to each federal (read: national, Australia wide) election
    • it takes politicians statements at face value, and doesn’t factor in actual behaviour in power which is often at odds (if you’re curious, look up the history of high speed rail or nuclear power in Australia. Both have been used for electioneering again and again, neither exist despite the advocating party winning)
