  • I’m not sure if you’re agreeing or trying to disprove my previous comment - IMHO, we are saying the exact same thing. As long as those stranded travelers or data breaches cost less than the missed business from not getting the product out in the first place, from a purely financial point of view, it makes no sense to withhold the product’s release.

Let’s be real here, most developers are not working on airport ticketing systems or handling millions of users’ private data, and the cost of those systems failing isn’t nearly as dramatic. Those rigid procedures civil engineers have to follow come from somewhere, and it’s usually not from any individual engineer’s good will, but from regulations and procedures written from the blood of previous failures. If companies really had to feel the cost of data breaches, I’d be willing to wager we’d suddenly see a lot more traction over good development practices.

  • So sorry to hear this - do those couple of hours with the machine help him a little at least? Did he try different masks, by any chance? I had a nasal mask initially, and eventually switched to nasal pillows before I started actually enjoying mine. Everyone’s anatomy and way of sleeping are different, so there’s often some trial and error necessary.

For example, a lot of people dislike nasal pillows cause they’re much easier to rip out or have a leak for some. A lot of people seem to like nasal masks, while I hated mine with a passion, as even with the XL size, my (large) nose’s bridge was rubbing against it and hurt quite a bit. Some people also seem to love their full-face masks - they tend to work better for mouth breathers and those sleeping on their backs.

  • Do you remember what your AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index, number of “events” oper hour) was? Normal is 5 or less, severe sleep apnea is 30 or more - I was at 69 events an hour. Considering an event is either 10 seconds or more without breathing (or a more or less equivalent drop in blood oxygenation due to partial respiratory tract blockage), it means I wasn’t breathing for at least an hour and half every night 😂

  • I donate a bunch of things on Marketplace (mostly baby/kids’ clothes and toys the kids outgrew). I also give to the local food banks and food drives whenever I can and think about it. If you’re specifically asking about money, I give to, and last summer fundraised for, Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Technologies very seldom get chosen on technical merit alone. With messaging apps, it’s always the same problem - if the people you want to talk to don’t follow you to an alternative, you won’t be speaking to anybody. Of all people I regularly talk to, only my dad uses iMessage/RCS/SMS, everyone else is basically unreachable outside Messenger. It’s either cutting myself off from most communications with everyone I like, or having a Messenger account.

Otherwise my FB account is relegated to find or sell stuff on Marketplace at this point. The alternatives we used to have around here are basically dead.
