  • It’s not tv, but you could try reading some of Grant Morrison’s (the creative head) comics. The Filth has a lot of similar vibes and is a great intro to their work, and The Invisibles is nothing if not interesting and strange as all hell. It’s easily my favorite of theirs, but it’s also definitely not for everybody lol

Someone else already mentioned Pulp Fiction, so I’ll also add that Reservoire Dogs and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are a couple other Tarantino flicks that might scratch the itch.

There’s also the Evil Dead series. Movies and TV both, in different ways. The vibes get closer and closer to Happy as the series goes on, with Ash Vs Evil Dead (the tv series) probably coming the closest. Haven’t seen the remake/reimagining, but I hear that it’s more into the horror and gore than any of the others. Probably not what you’re looking for, that one.

Edit: Just remembered that Chainsaw Man exists. The anime is great, but the manga just goes harder (the author’s original style sells it better imo) and has way more content. Seriously, if you like Happy and only ever read one manga in your life, Chainsaw Man is a great pick for that one. They are cooking some crazy, meaningful, and beautifully odd shit thataways

  • Gerrymandering is the reason I get upset when people assume all texans/southerners are hateful hicks. Lived there for years and the right/left split is pretty balanced, even leaning left on many big issues, in most of the area I’ve frequented. It’s just that poorer areas are rigged to fail and the powers that be have been running dirty campaigns for longer than many of us have been alive.

Just this last cycle, an old friend in the area received two different mail ads for (iirc) Ted “Zodiac” Cruz. One of them was in english and the other spanish. The english one was, for the most part, “honest” (as much as these types can be called honest, I mean) about his platform, while the spanish one explicitly lied in a way that made him seem like he was trying to benefit the immigrant community. Extremely fucked up and not too uncommon, according to a few inter-generational sources. That plus how jurisdictions are divided has made it extremely difficult for the left to get any major wins for the last handful of decades+. The south is even less ruled by the people than the rest of the US and the many decent people just trying their best to survive out there get shit on for what their oppressors choose all the time.

Sorry for the rant and tbc, there are also tons of shitheads out there too. Its just not like what many outsiders assume it is, and everything about the situation pisses me off something rancid.

  • Not everybody on the right is a narcissist, and it helps nobody to flatten the personhood of millions of people in that way if the actual goal is positive change. It implies that there is no way to communicate or come to an understanding with any of them, which is just not how the world works and only undermines and ignores the potential many of them have to learn better. It takes types more patient than myself to reach them, but I’ve seen firsthand that it is entirely possible to change minds on these things. If Bernie Sanders was able to get fox news viewers to cheer for socialist ideas, then they (or at least some of them) are not so lost as to never be found.

I agree that many of them will not reconsider their siding until trouble kicks down their own doors, but I don’t think giving up on people who have been fooled is actually a path toward true betterment.

  • That does sound really cool tbh. I bet they got started by making minor alterations to other people’s work, too. And I really do hear you and, on some levels, really agree. I just also see it as we all start where we start and that can’t be helped. Like, those first few steps need to be pretty small for the average person, and most of everyone models themselves after someone else in some way or other. I just dont think of it as an fu until the money comes in, is what I’m saying ig. It’s definitely a deeper shade of grey past that point tho.

If you ever find that fortnite vid or one of some magically talented sweepist (lol), please do drop a link!

  • I am of the opinion that once a piece of art is shared with the world, it stops belonging solely to the creator and instead becomes the property of the community. I also know how hard it can be to just barely scrape by, so I don’t personally have a problem with people making low effort money in this way. It is a bit scummy to piggyback on people doing actual skilled work, but at the same time, so is much of the world in far more direct and brutal ways.

Other than that; agreed. It feels like one of a few next logical steps for that sort of og YouTube fandom energy. If it inspires joy and isn’t hurting people, I say let em at it

  • Second verse slapped harder than expected.

And on the topic of nightcore being art or not; who cares? Art doesn’t have to be this totally involved thing for every person’s every project. Making minor alterations to other people’s work is its own style and form of creative exploration and, if encouraged and engaged with sufficiently, can easily grow into something with more luster and prestige. And besides that, some songs do just be sounding better when played faster and higher than intended. Artists or not, good on em for playing around and finding the ones work.
