For local gallery. Simple gallery is better.
But for searching your photos, Google photos is still pretty great.
Maps and Photos are ok IMO. Slowly getting shittier though.

There’s the 5$/month option available if you don’t search more than 300 times a month.
There are plenty of great apps developed by one or only a few people. I’m personally not surprised.
Nothing went wrong. Reddit’s desire to monetize simply trumps everything.

Used thinkpads (like the T480) are a great choice.
I use Manjaro Cinnamon on mine.
The biggest problem is if Google can influence all the major websites (banks, e-commerce, news sites, streaming services, social media, etc) to adopt this standard.
They’ve done it before with AMP.
