  • “Unless compelling evidence emerges that mirror life would not pose extraordinary dangers, we believe that mirror bacteria and other mirror organisms, even those with engineered biocontainment measures, should not be created,” the authors write in Science.

“We therefore recommend that research with the goal of creating mirror bacteria not be permitted, and that funders make clear that they will not support such work.”

World-leading scientists have called for a halt on research to create “mirror life” microbes amid concerns that the synthetic organisms would present an “unprecedented risk” to life on Earth.

I’m not saying the scientists involved are idiots, but the reporting on this seems to be ban now and ask questions later.

  • Humanity is still coming out of its infancy. Modern science and medicine are only around 300 years old, human flight around a hundred while homo sapiens are hundreds of thousands of years old. A large number of people still have no homes, food scarcity, poor education to the point of illiteracy and the literate read at a average 5th grade level. The old traditions and norms are still trying to claw back at progress. We only live for a short lifespan that means the species has to maintain knowledge across generations or keep relearning the same lessons over and over again and often hurts itself in confusion. The world isn’t getting dumber, but it’s not finding any grip or purchase when trying to drag itself out of the pit of the natural world.

  • General strike in the US seems like less of an impossibility year by year

Just restating some of the greatest hits:

    1. Universal healthcare

    2. Universal education through university level or trade school

    3. At least a month pto annually

    4. Parental leave for births

    5. Guaranteed sick leave

    6. 32hr new full time threshold before overtime

    7. Only public, equal funds for elections, no PACs/dark money/donations, no lobbyist bribes

    8. Any elected official over a certain level cannot engage in trading of individual stocks or own businesses, dump it all in an index fund or hand off management to someone else they cannot contact without a mediator and recording, immediate expulsion & no longer able to hold office when found in violation

    9. No billionaires/oligarchs, anyone with earnings and assets over a billion should be taxed at 100% and assets redistributed

Edit: May 1st 2028 looks like a good target thanks to the UAW https://www.thenation.com/article/activism/general-strike-2028-unions-labor-movement/

  • I try not to sub to streaming services with an ad+sub tier like cable TV which narrows options over the past few years but also helps me avoid some of that stuff.

Criterion collection/channel is usually good for Indies and some lesser known quality films.

And physical media but that’s mostly just for stuff I already know I like and would watch multiple times or for the commentary track because of how expensive that can get.

Theaters I’ll go to for epic movies in IMAX or sometimes new horror movies or the occasional rifftrax thing they do where they broadcast live from a theater to a bunch of other theaters.

  • I wouldn’t say I’m completely hopeful or doomed, the world is filled with terror and beauty. There are no gods or kings it’s just people. Historic and scientific education can help reduce anxiety about the unknown, change your own beliefs and behaviors to improve the situation locally before joining organizations looking to make broader changes. Learn what your fears are and face them, otherwise it will cloud your judgement and influence your decision making process.
