This happened to me. It actually started with, “I accidentally told this wifi router salesman guy at a trade show that I would listen to his sales pitch. Now he’s coming to our office in an hour to give it. Can you sit in on the meeting with me so I’m not alone? You know a lot about wifi, right?”

I didn’t even know what the meeting was about. I assumed he was trying to sell our office a wifi mesh system, which we already had. It wasn’t until about halfway through that I realized that he was trying to sell us these routers+source code so we could integrate them into our product line and resell them. And then I realized how many of our problems that would solve, so I started asking questions. Next thing I knew, I was the lead engineer on a wifi mesh system.

It was a super fun project, though. And I got lots of raises and a title increase for taking it on.

That’s actually a positive outcome! Mine is usually trying to fix a symptom of a larger problem no one wants to admit exists.

I thought wifi mesh systems were completely unthinkable in an enterprise environment considering their poor performance.

Not sure exactly what metric you are referring to for poor performance or in what conditions the mesh would achieve the poor performance you are referring to. As a former lead engineer on a mesh router system, I can assure you that mesh systems are capable of very high performance if done correctly and set up properly. Just about everyone uses them as far as I am aware. You wouldn’t have one wireless access point for a whole massive building.

No, you would use multiple access points, wired and likely powered with ethernet.

I’m imagining some kind of massive modified radio tower devoted to supplying wifi to a building directly below

I noted a software bug in a project close to release (I’m not software, and I was just helping another guys with that project) I noted it to my boss and he put me in charge to fix it before the release. All my work for the last couple of weeks has been triangulating with software guys to get patches and see if it works, meanwhile my actual work has been accumulating and nobody is helping me with that

Too often a conversation on slack turns into “can we have a zoom to talk about this?” And I’m like why just read and answer my question.

I think a lot more people than I assumed are not actually that good at processing written words.

Yeah, I mean I get that but I think this guy just likes to talk so it’s more innocent but annoying for others. He’s a good guy at least. Just one or two sentences via chat or 15-20 min call for information I have to type to recall.

I had a team lead that did this. Never answered his call. He got absolutely slaughtered for it (amongst other things) in the retro after a while after some people had reached breaking point.

Likewise when theres a company meeting which clearly and simply lays something out and people have questions.

Example: “We are switching payroll providers, This in no way impacts you as all direct deposits have been migrated. You might see a new note on the deposits from the new payroll company.” A bunch of hands go up… Its always the same people

How could you possibly have a question?!

I’m more concerned why you are so desperate to know. It’s completely irrelevant, humans have the gift (and curse) of memory, it could have been yesterday or 20 years ago, it’s just a common experience people joke about

I only ask because it’s obviously something fresh in your mind. It’s a weird thing to bring up. I couldn’t even tell you when my parents gave me a lecture because I don’t remember any it’s been so long.

But your being defense about it, so I’ll infer from that, and leave it alone.

No, you’re reading between lines something that isn’t there, do I need to bring up memes that I have seen to prove to you that I’m not insane by making a joke like that?
To me, that was such an uncalled for question that I got slightly creeped out, that’s why I got defensive, like even if I were a kid, maybe I am by your point of view anyway, why would someone want to know after reading that? Did you need context to find it funny or something?

Dude its the internet. If you don’t like a question just don’t answer it.

Weirdly I feel like you turned his question in to a lecture here haha
