    This is about revenge.

Syria was the only ally of Iran and Russia in the region. They have literally no other ally.

The overwhelming majority of Syrians HATED the Assad family. I have yet to meet a single Syrian who likes him or respects them. When people protested against Assad, he started shooting. Mass protests quickly turned into an armed uprising. He killed thousands of people. It didn’t matter. You can’t stop an entire nation against you. Bachar El Assad was in real trouble, so he begged his natural allies for help. Iran and Russia.

Vladimir Putin bombed entires cities. Entire cities were destroyed. The Iranian fought hard for him. They started sending Shia militias to fight for Assad

    https://syriaaccountability.org/syrian-victims-of-iranian-crimes-should-not-be-overlooked/

    https://aljumhuriya.net/en/2020/01/06/soleimani-in-syria-a-legacy-of-death-and-devastation/

10 years of fighting. 500,000 people were killed. 10 million Syrian fled the country.

But the Syrian people didn’t give up. At the end of the day, they still won. Syrian people around the world celebrated when Assad fled the country. Iran and Vladimir Putin were publically humiliated.

Now, Bachar El Assad and his cronies live in exile in Moscow. They stole billions of dollars before leaving. Average wage in Syria is less than $40. They can use their immense wealth to corrupt officials, hire thugs and destabilize the country. Many of them dream of plotting their return:

    https://www.reuters.com/investigations/assads-exiled-spy-chief-billionaire-cousin-plot-syrian-uprisings-russia-2025-12-05/

    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/5/al-assad-inner-circle-plotting-syrian-uprisings-from-russian-exile-report

Meanwhile the new Syrian President wants closer relationships with arab states like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar.

Iranian propaganda described as a crazy terrorist but turns out he is a ruthless pragmatic. He put on a suit and was welcomed by Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump. He promised to protect minorities. He allowed a dance festival. He even invited Jews to pray in Damascus.

The Iranian are extremely angry. They fought 10 years for Syria and ended up losing their only ally.

For both Assad henchmen and Iranian rulers, the attitude is now "Fuck. If we can’t control it, we are going break it".

I hope Syria becomes a thriving country.

The new government is just another dictatorship but with a different coat of paint.

Syria went from a pseudo monarchy to an Islamic Vanguard Oligarchy, with the overtures to non-Suni Arab communities not out of a sense of wanting pluralism Democratic power but as crumbs to keep those communities from rebelling.

His group war crimes are well documented , it is not merely an Iran propaganda point

Also don’t you find weird that he want a good relation with Russia and Israel who is occupying big chunk of Syria right now and breached Syrian sovereignty by killing Syrian under pretext of protecting the Druze?

      You got easily tricked right?

Sharaa said he had directed authorities to ensure future national events are “linked to the customs and culture of Syria”.

Believe it or not, an ex-terrorist puppet is not fit to run a government. I see no world in which Syrians have dignity, as part of their country is being occupied and the new rulers are ok with it. If Syria ever establishes a democracy, the first issue will be liberating occupied territory.

Nobody wants to replace the tyrannical Baathist regime with a western puppet, but this seems to be the case. I don’t expect this government to hold onto power long, as they are quickly making themselves enemies of the public.

If we ever get a democracy it will:

A- Need a shit ton of time because most people are not politically aware

B- Isreal would glass our ass before that becomes a thing

And FWIW most people are happy that the majority Sunni are in charge regardless of their actions, makes you wonder…

This dude fought a bloody war against enemies that systematically destroyed hospitals, schools, and entire neighborhoods

This dude has his fair share of war crimes. He didn’t fought against the bloody regime just to save Syrian civilians but to serve Israel, the USA and turkey interests

This is ridiculous. I’m no expert on Syria that shit is bananas complicated.

But a guy aspiring to get closer to gulf states along with Israel, France, the US and Turkey is not a good guy. He’s also literally al qaeda.

Assad ain’t good. But weapons and support flowed through Syria to hezbollah and the Palestinian resistance during his government. Objectively a good thing.

Thanks for pointing out the realpolitik of Assad’s Syria vs CIA/ISIS-controlled Syria re: the axis of resistance.

Not an expert, that civil war has way too much going on. Acting like Jolani is the good guy is… I really can’t think of a worse set of characteristics.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
