See title. I have to scroll past a lot of German and other non-English posts in my feed. I’ve been blocking them as I see them, but it’s getting tiring. Is there not some way to just tell Lemmy the languages I speak and have it show me only those?

Edit: So I’m a Voyager user and was naively looking in the app settings… Found it when I logged into Lemmy.World in a browser 🤦‍♂️

Maybe one day Voyager (or other app) could try to deduce languages with AI or some magic.

In principle, people have to fill the "language field’ before posting. If you set it properly you’ll see only languages you’ll understand.

this field is also quite important for visually impaired user, who use tech like “screen reader”. So it’s worth trying to use-it.

Also please don’t downvote language you don’t understand, on a small community (because not many lemming speaks that language), if a thread gets 5-10 downvotes there is no way for the locals to bring-it back to positive

Blocking the communities? There aren’t that many non-English comms so blocking all those comms shouldn’t be too bothersome.

You can also opt to block the whole instance, if the whole instance is language-specific. This is a new feature in Lemmy 0.19. This is effectively the same as blocking all comms from that instance; it will not block users from that instance and you’ll still see their comments in other comms :)

Is there not some way to just tell Lemmy the languages I speak and have it show me only those?

There is actually this exact feature if you look in the settings. But most posts don’t bother specifying a language and the language is not detected automatically AFAIK. So it’s not too helpful. But blocking the non-English comms should be sufficient.

The “language” setting would be vastly more useful if you could select a default post language, as well as apps implementing language as a choice when making a comment.

You’ll never be in doubt whether I posted something from app or web, as I actually have the possibility to specify the language when using the web interface, which otherwise is “undefined” by default.

Communities can be configured to only allow one language. It’s the case for most of the French speaking communities for instance

Go to your profile settings and unselected “undefined” under your languages. Make sure that “English” is still selected.

You’ll be unable to see the majority of content, but this is the easiest method if you really don’t want to see any content from non-English speaking countries.

I’m in Germany and I barely see any German posts… Must be something from either your user or app settings.

Lemmy has language settings, but many users don’t configure them correctly. In a perfect world you could set your language filters and automatically filter away any posts not in your selected languages. In reality, most posts have the language option unselected.
