Small room with enough desks for just the immediate team and plenty of space in the desks would be my dream. Maybe a whiteboard or two. That would be excellent.

Outside of work: Both. I want people to think I look good in the clothes I wear, but even if they don’t I am probably not going to change them. At work: We have a dress code. I follow it to the letter, because I think it makes a positive difference in how I am perceived by my employer. I almost completely disregard my own preferences in this context.

But if you just run it locally an a media server in your home, and you don’t expose the service to the internet, that doesn’t really matter? Though perhaps more people connect to their Jellyfin instances remotely than I realize.

We probably live in different countries, but where I live it’s more like you can’t get pre-approved for anything unless you either have a large amount of money saved up, or your salary is high enough that it’s far beyond what you would reasonably need to get paid to afford the mortgage.

Imo it is fucking stupid to care about this stuff though. Celebrity worship is a cancer. Obsessing about the love lives of total strangers because they’re famous is not only pointless but also destructive.

I’m from neither the US nor Canada, and in my case it certainly isn’t a matter of projection. I’m sure things have been getting a lot better for many people in China. However, it is still the case that China has a lot of human rights issues which are simply not as widespread in a lot of Western countries, the US included. And due to nation wide systems, such as hukou, it is very difficult for the population in poorer, rural areas to work legally in more affluent areas where the pay is higher. My understanding is that this has led to large scale “illegal migration” within the country’s borders, where workers are paid far less (sometimes not getting paid at all), work under poor conditions, and suffer abuses at the hands of their employers with little to no legal recourse due to their illegal status. China is a very inequitable society, and a lot of the misery that its less rich and powerful citizens have to deal with goes unnoticed by the rest of the world (and indeed the rest of its population), because we see stuff like this and are impressed by China’s progress. And no doubt that there’s actually been progress in a lot of areas, but the somewhat tired “at what cost?” question is still as pertinent as ever.

None of this is a defense of the US or Canada. Just saying that for the average person, China is probably a worse place to live and to work in.

Tbf South Korea has plenty of economic, demographic, and social problems as well. Still miles better than North, but saying that only the North doesn’t work is not really accurate.

What’s up with all the China hype on Lemmy? These projects are impressive, no doubt, but their cost in terms of human rights violations are pretty high. I’m speaking generally, I don’t have the specifics with regards to this subway system. Either way it’s not really comparable to a project like this in a country like Canada imo.

I think I will switch to Linux, possibly dual boot with Win 11 just in case there are games I can’t play on Linux.

Judging someone by what YT thinks they would like to watch is even worse. I know this is completely besides the point, and it is just a meme, but judgy behavior like that irks me.

I considered it before I switched from 7 to 10, but since 10 still makes it possible to create an offline account and disable most of the spyware and other bloat, I opted to stay with Windows for another generation of OS. 11 is different though, it’s several steps too far into proprietary hell.

Since when is Joe Rogan bad enough to warrant getting shot in the first place? I feel like the guy has said some bad (and far more dumb) things but it’s not like he poses any kind of danger to anyone does he? I know this is besides the point, but murder is far from proportional to anything (that I am aware of) that Joe has been known to do. With that said I don’t really know much about what he’s been up to for the past 5 years or so.
