Instead of a “renaissance man”, I’m a “renaissance nerd”. Pinball? Sure. Sci-fi? Of course. video games? Natch. 70’s Italian Prog-rock? A raison d’etre.

Thank god, MS Teams now lets you share a window instead of a screen. Coworker would share his 4k and all of us needed magnifying glasses
It gets better, but I’ve never gone back and reread it. The ending, IIRC is goofy too.
Honestly, I love his writing, but the books of his I’ve finished are Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash, Diamond Age, Zodiac, and ReamDe. The others I’ve either struggled to get into (Seveneves because the first chapter is so damn down) or just never started.
Honestly, ReamDe and Cryptonomicon are IMHO his most readable, maybe because they’re sent in the current time. Though I loved Snow Crash.
IIRC, there’s an investment group that does a version of this - they short the stock then release and publicize the information.
Jared 2.0?
Congrats to Alex, and to Vintaglow for making it! They’re sold out but you can order for next year.
It has to get better somehow. Yes it’s horrible. Absolutely. But you have to start somewhere.
Yeah, I was going to say “nice try posting here, Alex”
It’s better than 0%
The article is giving Elmo far too much credit in there, and downplaying the long-term effect. If I were looking at making my EVs compatible with their system, I would be scrambling for alternatives.
Was there supposed to be a link? Thanks.
I think he’s talking about the LLMs, which…yeah. AI and LLMs are lumped together (which makes sense, but classification makes a huge difference here)
Not all of this, you have some points in here (smart TVs are worth mentioning), but a lot of this is elsewhere, too, though. And was done before AI. A LOT of things are in public records, for instance. Yes AI and interconnectedness it makes it easier, but this is nothing knew. And the fact that they’re still this bad at targeted ads means there’s still hope.
Deep cut, and I appreciate the hell out of that!
American Spectator, so probably H.L. Mencken wrote that.
He also wrote this: “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.”
This was posted earlier. Just because they’re not going to give it to authorities doesn’t mean it won’t sell it to them. Or that it isn’t selling it to everybody else already. The other thread mentions that iOS natively has an app that’s completely private, and that there are apps for android and iOS that don’t share the data with anybody.
One of my bosses has a concept of “T-shaped developers”, which means you know everything a little, and have depth on one thing.
7months: ouch, sorry to hear. I wish I had some words of wisdom to share.
It works great if nobody ever leaves or dies or takes vacation. We try to discourage siloization of projects and emphasize cross-training - it makes the job more interesting, gives people more/better tools to solve problems with, etc. And anytime the business objects we mention the project where X left and how painful it is to get new anything added/enhanced because none of those tenets were involved.
However, all bets are off with offshore contractors. Some want to learn, some simply don’t care and will do the bare minimum.
Sounded like nothing Android had the certified accuracy or features (fall detection) of the Apple Watch.i don’t follow Android smartwatches so I don’t know.
