They make dedicated Nvidia images and I’ve heard good things. It’s supposed to be one of the distros to pick if you want a good out of the box experience with Nvidia. Only used the Amd/Intel image myself though.

Crypto was an annoying bubble. If you were in the tech industry, you had a couple of years where people asked you if you could add blockchain to whatever your project was and then a few more years of hearing about NFTs. And GPUs shot up in price. Crypto people promised to revolutionize banking and then get rich quick schemes. It took time for the hype to die down, for people to realize that the tech wasn’t useful, and that the costs of running it weren’t worth it.

The AI bubble is different. The proponents are gleeful while they explain how AI will let you fire all your copywriters, your graphics designers, your programmers, your customer support, etc. Every company is trying to figure out how to shoehorn AI into their products. While AI is a useful tool, the bubble around it has hurt a lot of people.

That’s the bubble side. It also gets a lot of baggage because of the slop generated by it, the way it’s trained, the power usage, the way people just turn off their brains and regurgitate whatever it says, etc. It’s harder to avoid than crypto.

I made a typo for one of my employment dates while filing the background check. Caught it right after submitting it and then asked around and everybody told me that they’ll call and ask about it if they can’t figure it out from just looking back at my resume.

Next morning they called me and said they had to close the role because of budget cuts. Two months later I got an email saying my hiring was being paused because my background check was flagged and I had 10 days from the check to dispute it. I decided to call the company and they told me that they had already hired someone else for the role.

So yeah, getting the dates right can be important.

I taught my mom to play by using a couple of starter decks, giving a short overview of the objective and what the parts of the card meant, and then played a couple of matches with our cards revealed to each other. You just need to be patient, willing to explain anything, and be generous with allowing take backs and reminding about any rules they missed. And remember that if you want someone to keep playing with you, they need to be able to have fun too.

It’s a common thing in programming. There’s some legacy code that isn’t being used and yet removing it causes things to break. Nobody has the time to figure out what is still referencing that code, so it just gets a comment next to it saying “Not used, but removing it breaks the build” and then forgotten about.

Allowing Google to run an ad campaign targeting their members wasn’t the benefit Blue Cross was talking about, that’s a side effect from them not turning off the data sharing option in the Google analytics settings.

The analytics data is used for prioritizing development work. If a tool they have on the website relies on a library that isn’t compatible with a new version of React, for instance, do they know how many people use it? Having analytics allows you to decide what’s worth spending the development time to maintain.

The analytics would be for the web development team to see which pages/features are used. Usually a product manager uses that data for setting priorities on what gets worked on.

If you turn the disc over, you can actually count the rings without needing to cut into it! This lets you skip having to glue the disc back together after checking the age.

I had to do this to get the factory oil filter off my motorcycle. Went through 3 different oil filter removal tools and all I achieved was rounding off all the edges of the filter.

I have my Final Fantasy X still, even used it when I played the remastered version recently. It didn’t ask me to use the website for anything. I thought it was the Final Fantasy IX guide that required you to use PlayOnline for the actual solutions.

In the US, people consider any public sector job to be working in/for the government. Judges, Legislators, the president, TSA security, Park Rangers, Cops, Clerks at the driver’s license office, etc. would all be considered government roles. Sometimes you need to clarify if you mean federal government or state government.

The president, his staff, and his political appointees are called the administration.

I imagine the people who actually think about how they are working just for basic needs are mostly a different group of people than those yelling about freedom.

I don’t know how many conservatives wake up in the morning with the feeling that everything they do is just to make some rich guy richer until they eventually die. Because why would they be a conservative at that point?

Why would he turn away from the crowd and do the motion again if he was trying to show his heart going out to the crowd?

You would have to be an enormous idiot to believe in that excuse.

It’s not that your nose can’t taste very much. It’s like the other three, eating a nose won’t taste very good.

You’re supposed to get to the nose and think about how it definitely wouldn’t taste good. Then you think about how it doesn’t really smell that much better than you imagine it would taste. And then you go “Ahh. Smells! My nose is good at smelling!” and then die laughing at the hilarity of the wordplay.

Seems a few people have gotten that confused. Article spent too much time rehashing the change in 15.0 before getting to 15.1 and felt like a typical ragebait article.

Still seems a little ragebaity, they don’t really have a lot of proof that Apple has intentionally disabled running unsigned apps. Their argument is that Apple changed the process for running in 15.0 and an app won’t start in 15.1, therefore the end of the era of sideloading. Personally, I would’ve liked more details on that part and less on history of 15.0.

I’ve always felt like people were overblowing the pocket lint thing, since I’ve never had it happen to me. Just realized that it’s because my pockets are too small, so the only pocket I can use is my back pocket with the port sticking out.

My first job I spent 3 years working on a variety of projects that never shipped. It was frustrating at the time, but the experience was good for me. Now I have fun writing code and working with my teammates and if my code doesn’t ship, well it’s not as bad as not having anything ship for 3 years.

They are running a 2004 week, looking back at tech from that era.

I was just reading about the Red Bull case the other day. It seems like they settled in order to make the stories all about how they ‘lost’ the ‘red bull gives you wings’ case, which sound like a stupid lawsuit, rather than go to court and have the media write about how Red Bull doesn’t do anything that a cup of coffee won’t do. They even still use the ‘gives you wings’ slogan.

The poorly designed feature itself isn’t about showing ads, it’s just showing the top item of the news feed. The news feed can have ads, depending on what the developer publishes to it, which is why I never scroll down to that section.
