No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why don't cars have a way to contact nearby cars like fictional spaceships do?
16·3 months agoImagine the giant trucks road raging because you’re in the left lane and only going +20 the speed limit. Or the old creeps hitting on teenagers.
What if we instead imagine the truck drivers politely asking you to move over? What if the ability to communicate freely with other drivers made the experience closer to walking in a crowd. I’m imagining something that allows all vehicles within a certain radius to hear one another so you can communicate with courtesy. I think a lot of road rage stems from our frustrations with our inability to communicate (and be held accountable) by the people around us.

13·3 months agoIt seems the only data provided about the demographics and political leanings of the fandom are anecdotal accounts from social media. Do you think it ever occurred to the author that they might just have an algorithm that recognizes their preference for shitty content?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•My first jellyfin setupEnglish
2·4 months agoYou’re correct. The Fire Stick would be a client. I currently use a Pi 4 as my server and it works great, but I use KODI instead of jellyfin. This means that nothing trys to transcode when I use it. However, my brother is able to connect to my server through Tailscale and he does some sort of GPU pass thru with a jellyfin container and as far as I know it works great.

3·4 months agoIf you’re looking for mini PC recommendations, I have been very happy with my Beelink Ser8. It was chosen specifically for handbrake encoding and is an order of magnitude faster than my underpowered decade old desktop.
Edit. I just reread your post saying that you don’t want to buy a mini PC so disregard that advice but if you want to stream to TVs on a budget, I am a big fan of the Fire Stick. If you get them on sale, they’re usually available for half the listed price (about $25 when I got them). You can get them on ebay if you don’t want to support Bozos. Currently they’re very easy to configure and they work great as long as you can get over the clunky menu design.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Hot birds in your area iykyk
30·6 months agoIistened to an episode of Conan Needs a Friend where he interviewed some bird guy who suggested that the bird that best resembles Conan is the Andean Cock of the Rock. Curiosity got the better of me so I searched for ‘Andean Cock of the Rock’. The first result was not a bird but was instead a poorly made deep fake of Dwayne Johnson breaking one off in a South American gentleman.

2·6 months agoI played through Metroid Dread finally about a month ago. Had it since it launched. When my wife was a kid, their rule was that they had to beat the game before you could get a new one. I rarely beat games as a kid so that seemed harsh to me.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Microplastics will be the "boomers all have lead poisoning" of millennials
201·6 months agoI’m crazy. Mark My Words. In 20 years, we’ll have so many microbes capable of consuming plastic people will be bitching about their packages not being able to effectively protect their goods from spoiling. The goldfish has spoken.
The author makes a pretty compelling case for letting Phil go. Can you imagine the owners of a sports team continuing to pay a Manager millions of dollars a year despite them getting their asses kicked every time they suit up?

I’d say virtually all Hispanic people have some Native American ancestry. The number of Hispanic people living in the Americas with an exclusively European lineage is probably very small. But, that’s just like my opinion, man.
