How unsafe is it? Are barrels even needed or are they just myths propagated by Big Gun?

The case will pop and throw shit everywhere. You could die, you could be injury free.

The barrel is needed as the cartridge sits in one end precisely to stop it exploding outwards with pressure and instead propel the projectile down range.

Would the case really shrapnel though? If you don’t stand behind it, in front of it or anywhere around it, this may be fine.

Maybe it would be better to just put metal bits around the powder and put a delay on the explosion… wait a second… fucking grenades always sneaking up on people

Edit… shit, now I need to reclassify grenades as stealth devices.

The bullet won’t go far or fast. The case being lighter will swell and fly back poorly. The neck as the thinnest part of the case may split. It makes a shit grenade because the pressure spike will be low to begin with as the case swells instantly and the bullet plops out. Most likely no shrapnel.

There was a study done for fire safety in the US as to what happens in house fires when ammo cooks off. Do firefighters need to abandon the housefire etc… The tests showed the cooked off ammo barely makes its way out of the cardboard boxes they are stored in because the pressure is very low.

In the above case in the photo, some eye & ear protection and sturdy clothing and you’ll be fine 99 times out of 100.
