Am I the only one here who doesn’t see the big deal? Op probably had to glance at their phone for like 2 seconds. If you’re going straight with no traffic I think that’s an extremely common thing to do once and a while, even to just switch music or whatever.
Nah, there’s several comments saying the same thing. Texting and driving is dangerous, yes. Taking a pic that takes literally no concentration for a few seconds on a long stretch of interstate at night, not very risky. I can almost guarantee the same people whining have fiddled with their phones to change songs/podcasts/audiobooks/GPS for a few seconds at some point in city traffic.

You don’t even need to look. Every smartphone will open the native camera app if you double tap the power button, while the screen is off.
