I’ve heard people trashing mastodon before, is there like a reason people don’t like it? I haven’t spent much time on it myself.

I think people came to Mastodon expecting a new Twitter. Mastodon doesn’t try to hook you with algorithms the same way Twitter does, so you don’t get the same dopamine cycle.

I think it’s great, all the people I want to follow are on there and I don’t get random tweets that “may interest me” and “people I should follow” every time I scroll. It sucks as a platform to meet (and get enraged by) strangers on the internet. The lack of an algorithm and reliable view statistics also makes attempts at gaining any kind of influencer status pointless, and no company will bribe you with free stuff when they can’t see how many people you’ve surreptitiously advertised their product to.

To me it was tiring, it’s people trying to be activists 24/7, which is important but if it’s the only content and everything else gets buried then it’ll only appeal to a group of people.
It lacks casual conversation, memes, shitposts, porn and hentai artists, more variation of content.
Also bots reposting content from other social networks not helping to develop new content.

The people on Mastadon are why I chose not to stay there. If you don’t know and adhere to the “expected behaviour” there you’re the devil and a million people with furry avatars will surely let you know.

Being self righteous and compete with others for who is the most morally superior. Being against any sort of algos that make interesting content. Being against trying to grow the fedi as it’s “growth mindset”. Against having your feed not being political and activist content that gets exhausting. Being an out of touch old white collar worker who has zero money issues they actually have to deal with

Yeah… sorry if I am very skeptical of your criticism…

99% of the time anyone says what you say… there’s a reason for it.

Honestly I really dgaf. I have a gay sibling and a gay niece. I am an ally and a realist and if I call you out on your bullshit that doesn’t make me a bigot/homophobe. I’ve been arrested defending my sibling so I’d say I’m pretty fucking invested in protecting lgbtq people.

There are tons of people who are lgbtq who use that as a “get out of jail free card” every time they act like pieces of crap or hypocrites. Mastadon has a lot of that.

              You asked, I answered.

There are possibly multiple reasons (which i don’t really agree with)

      • It’s bad because it’s popular

      • It’s bad because of features

      • It’s bad because the users

Nah just the usual issue of nerds having a pathological compulsion to look down on anything that doesn’t meet their arbitrary standards for niche technologies. Same with people scoffing at someone who uses too “mainstream” of a Linux distro like Ubuntu or Mint rather than Arch or whatever.
