  • I think this sorta misses the point, at least from my perspective. Nobody cares what phone another person has until they try to send that person a picture or a video that looks like it was sent from 2004.

I know that this is only really a problem in the United States, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying for those who have to deal with it. I have no interest trying to convince my 74 year old mother and a dozen other friends/family members to install a different messaging app on their iPhone so we can send each other videos that aren’t compressed to shit.

Most people with an iPhone just want to use the default messenger cause, frankly, iMessage works and it works really well. You know when that default Messages app doesn’t work well? When you’re forced to use an antiquated technology like SMS/MMS. Apple knows this and banks on it to sell more products. It’s one of many anti-competitive practices they employ.

RCS isn’t a perfect solution, but this is a huge step forward in closing a gap that should’ve been closed a decade ago. Nobody cares what phone another person is using. They do care about having a premium experience with a device they paid $1,000+ dollars for. They’re also ignorant enough to blame a green bubble or the believed cause of that green bubble, which is any device other than an iPhone.

  • I wonder if being within those circles, you’ve been exposed to certain ugliness on a more intimate level; with people who feel comfortable enough in their in-group to express their more radical thoughts. Anecdotally, I’ve known a few vegans but have never been lectured nor had views pushed on me.

Hell, the only time I ever hear about the radical, pushy vegan is when people complain about them. On the flip side, I’ve been exposed to meat eaters who seem to get offended when someone mentions the concept of veganism, as if someone else not eating animal products is somehow a trigger for them.

Again, all anecdotes here, I’m just figuring one’s exposure to the vocal minorities on either side of the conversation is where you run into the problems.

  • Others have already responded to you with many of the same complaints I was going to bring up so I’ll just highlight a few things:

    • First off, I have a 2019 Subaru Impreza so not the latest generation
    • There used to be this issue where, upon turning the car on, you couldn’t interact with the infotainment system for a good 10 seconds which includes volume adjustments. Let’s say you had the volume set to 20 (max 35) when you last drove, well it’s going to be blaring as soon as you start up the car again, but you won’t be able to do anything about it for a good 10 seconds. Luckily this issue has gotten better (I believe with a firmware update from the dealership after I complained), but it’s still not fixed completely.
    • Recently I took my car in for work and they needed to keep it overnight, so they let me borrow a brand new 2024 Outback Touring. This was great cause I got to test a brand new car “for free,” and what I learned is that they now put all HVAC stuff (seat warming, climate control, etc.) on this screen that has poor touch sensitivity. It’s obnoxious. Also the system itself is only marginally better than my 5 year old car, which is to say it’s still incredibly clunky and slow. They’ve made improvements, no doubt, but it’s built from the same trash.
