I get pretty easy depressed watching TV shows with a depressing tone or a lot of character deaths or that. If its more in the background its generally fine, but things like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and The Boys are a lot for the moment. How does the new Fallout show compare?
Edit: Came back after watching it. Its depressing, but nowhere near as bad as people made it sound. No main character deaths, main characters do stupid stuff but are generally good people, and while things are grim and dark, there is hope for progress despite everything.
There are a lot of both dark themes and on screen deaths and violence, many of which are pretty graphic.
Fallout as a franchise is well known for some pretty horrific elements, often painted over with bright colors and upbeat music, but horrific all the same.
If Game of Thrones or The Boys were too much for you, then Fallout certianly is.
That said, it is an absolutely brilliant and faithful adaptation of the source material, and as a long time fan of the games, I loved every minute of it.
I’d second this take. I see so many elements that typically get “updated” or “refreshed” when IPs are adapted to different media. I’ve often thought this is a vain attempt to appeal to the non-“fanboys” and appear more accessible. This show does NOT do that and it’s fucking amazing.

I’ve only watched the first three episodes so far and there’s already some retcon, plus a certain faction that should control the region which is nowhere to be seen. And a certain faction that shouldn’t be there and yet is. It’s not that faithful. Not a bad show really but it shouldn’t be canon.
I’ll admit, I’m not deep enough of a lore whore to pick out the retcons.
This is the futherest in the future as far as timeline goes, so watch the show to see who controls the region now and what happened to said faction.
Yes. But in a funny way.
The random farmer dude talking about his whole family being killed in Filly was one such moment where it was both hilarious and also deeply depressing.
The tone matches the original games’ tone. Horrible, horrible shit juxtaposed with absurdity and humor.
I have an aunt that died there once!
Its dramatic and grim but not terribly depressing. I have only seen the first episode so far so I cant speak beyond the first hour. I’m honestly impressed with how they captured a lot of the Fallout theme, mostly the naïve positivity of corporate mascot posters that are literally plastered over the blood stains. Loved the symbolism there.
Here’s a brief summary of ALL the comments:
Everybody dies and it’s hilarious.

I don’t know about the show, but the games are known for their dark humor, weird npcs, and unusual creatures. But, it is a post-apocalyptic setting, and I’m sure some moments will be darker than others I would imagine.
It’s definitely not as comedic as the trailers have shown, it’s a fairly serious series and deals with a lot of depressing stuff, overall I loved the first season, but knowing the fate of one of the major factions that I identified most with kinda bummed me out.
Thanks for not dropping the name of the faction. I’m only halfway in.
The first 10 minutes is quite depressing since you witness the ol’ bomb drops. Then a massacre takes place in middle of the episode. I didn’t find Breaking Bad depressing but it’s definitely not The Boys tier.
