Ford was a literal Nazi sympathiser as well. I don’t think there’s an ‘ethical’ car you can buy.

Subaru pre-Toyota “takeover” seems nice. Even post Toyota they’re at least still paying lip service to environmental initiatives… Just don’t look at their MPGs lol

This is what I don’t get tbh. Japanese cars were supposed to be economical and environmentally friendlier. Yet when a heavier German car has more power, it still uses less fuel because the Japanese don’t know how to make a diesel engine that doesn’t suck and gasoline engines just plain suck unless we’re talking about a performance engine that’s meant to be enjoyed.

They figured things out with hybrids long ago, but few models got plug-in hybrid variants until like 5-6 years ago which was way too late. And the local Toyota dealer still proudly advertises that they sell hybrids that don’t need to be plugged in. Why? A German car with 3 years of depreciation is going to get me more power, luxury, interior space and better fuel economy for LESS MONEY. Sure it’s a 3 year old German car but I can pay a mechanic if needed and I’m not afraid to do timing chains or anything valvetrain related if it really comes down to that.

My Subaru does 35 mpg highway. I got it because I needed a cheap reliable car for a while and I do like the increased ride height. But my older BMW did 47 or better and my slightly newer MB could do 60 on a long run. Both had more power.

In fact the only car I’ve ever owned that drank more fuel than the Subie was a V8 first gen Porsche Cayenne. But that was an honest to god truck. It had diff locks and a two speed transfer case. The transfer case along weighed about as much as the Subaru’s entire powertrain. I just wish I’d held out for the facelift turbo that popped up for sale 2 weeks later… I’d still have the car probably. I had a 90s American full size car with a V6 and plenty of both torque and power. Still took less fuel than the Subaru.

At this point I’ve realized I could buy an Audi Q7 V12 TDi and have better fuel economy. Yes, with 3 times the cylinders as my Outback.

The worst part is, I actually really like the Outback. I want to keep it. But I’ll have to install an LPG kit that costs half the car’s value and thats an extra service in addition to the car already needing an oil change every 2 months. And I’ll probably do it because the Outback has a unique balance between the drivability of a car and the offroadability of a semi ok SUV. It has decent clearance, more than a RAV4 because mine is the USDM model. Not as much as a Land Cruiser but then a Land Cruiser is a big yacht with a tiny engine here in Europe.

Ford was a messed up dude. He’s really idolized as an industrialist, but he was a control freak with possible other psych issues. Undermined his son, Edsel at many opportunities because he was a control freak. On top of his anti-semitic, pro-NAZI, anti-union antics.

Part Jewish here, yes the Nazi sympathizing was awful. But at the same time, he spearheaded massive improvements for workers.

Does that make up for supporting Nazis? No. But most people are some mix of good and bad

When I was 15 I read a book that said Hitler couldn’t be completely evil cause he improved the lives of the German people. I’d just rather not have had all the bad shit he did.

There’s no such thing as completely evil, that’s fairytale shit. Every bad person in history was a complete and complex human being with their own motivations. Hitler probably thought he was doing the right thing. That’s a lot scarier than the “he was just evil” hand wave.

Until he got the whole country bombarded, tons of them killed, and drove the country into the brink of economic collapse? Poor argument. If you’re gonna say he did something worthwhile take off the fucking kid gloves and admit no matter how absolutely horrific a manner in which he did it, Nazi experiments advanced knowledge of medicine and anatomy.

Those experiments didn’t advance a thing. That’s a myth. They had no scientific rigor. Nothing was gained from that.

To be fair, not all of the advancements were intentional. Much of modern medical ethics are based entirely on the fucked up shit Nazis did. Off the top of my head though they proved a lot of shit didn’t work and invented a high power electron magnescope. I would have to circle back to fully remember everything.

Bought it used long, long after Ford had died and there’s no obvious connections anymore.

Trying to compare the regular, everyday villainy of modern Ford Motor Company to Musk’s cartoon super villainy seems like something a Tesla owner would say as a coping mechanism.

No joke, it’s pretty much impossible to find a car by a manufacturer that didn’t benefit from human rights abuses one way or another. Most European cars are from companies founded (or funded) by Nazi Germany or its axis friends. Same goes for Japanese cars. In the US, either the founder is a seething racist (like Ford and Tesla) or the company has been collaborating too much with the army (like Jeep). And don’t get me started with China.

I really wonder how people like you get through life, is every purchase a moral dilemma?

Every German company made things for the Nazis, they were a total war economy, and Henry Ford is long dead.

Considering that I don’t have a car, I’ve been boycotting most media and many brands for years, and I have no friends because nobody shares the same ethics as I do? Yeah every purchase is and should be a moral dilemma. (The proper solution is to drop society and go raise my own crops in the middle of the mountains, someday I’ll save up to do just that)

If we’re going to judge everything and everyone today on things that happened a hundred years ago, done by people who are only vaguely subject related then we’re all guilty and we should all kill ourselves.

Let’s just let history be history? Germans today aren’t responsible for the Nazis anymore either, ffs.
