New Mexico predates Mexico. From wikipedia
New Mexico received its name long before the present-day nation of Mexico won independence from Spain and adopted that name in 1821. The name “Mexico” derives from Nahuatl and originally referred to the heartland of the Mexica, the rulers of the Aztec Empire, in the Valley of Mexico
True, but the meme cites Mexico City, which was called “Mexico City” before New Mexico was established
So Mexico should be New New Mexico, and New Mexico should be Old New Mexico.
We could just call one North and the other South. And then write a popular folk song that calls out landmarks South Mexico that are really Southern North Mexico. Country Roads style.
Worst of all is georgia, disgusting!
why? (not from the US)
Because there’s an entire country named Georgia 🇬🇪
And they stole it from the state of Georgia, USA.
Oh I didn’t think about it and the US state having the same name but now I imagine why OP said it 😂
not from the US
Because there’s a USbstate named Georgia.
yup I knew that (isn’t it where Macon and Atlanta are?) but I didn’t realise that it and the country have the same name. Thanks anyway!
It is where Macon and Atlanta are, and the name Sherman is still hated down there.
Never mind international cities, Indiana has a New Chicago. I don’t know how that even works.
We must find a newer Chicago.
Only to be outdone when someone discovers the newest Chicago.
I found a Chicago and bring all my friends, while it is still underground and before it gets cool.
Kinda like New Coke in that case
oh jeebz, they’re making the rest of the world great again
What city is new England based on?
I dunno but it’s the size of England.
Uganda?
England City, the capital of England. Duh.
My face when I realize I live in New England.
When you learn that Mexicans named New Mexico…
Darn immigrants ruining my good country!
Spaniards named New Mexico a couple centuries before Mexico existed.
The Mexica existed long before the Spanish arrived. They migrated to the Valley of Mexico from a land in the north they referred to as Aztlán when the Toltecs went into decline.
Nuevo Mexico was named by the Spanish in reference to this history, as they were following the Rio Grande north searching for the Cities of Gold referenced in these same Mexica (ie Aztec) legends.
Yes, US annexed New Mexico and Texas, which originally belonged to Mexico.
Kind of. The Spanish named New Mexico in the 1600s, and it was a much larger territory than the current state. The Mexicans named Mexico in 1821 when they gained their independence from Spain, and they acquired New Mexico as well. Then the US annexed it in the late 1800s.
And California…
Wait till the Kentuckians hear about Versailles France. They ain’t gonna like that
America is that newborn that thinks whatever his ancestors has are his
Americans are more like the English than they realize lol
Well, but New York is actually named after the duke of York
Edit: New York, New York City and Albany were all named after James II king of England and Ireland who was also James VII of Scottland, because before he became king he was duke of York and duke of Albany.
they can keep the old versions
Everybody knows that new Mexico is not part of the USA! 🤣
New Mexico was named such before Mexico was named. The Spaniards named a much larger territory that encompassed all of the current state of New Mexico, New Mexico. A couple centuries later the Mexican people revolted and gained their independence, and named the country Mexico in 1821
New Mexico was New Mexico long before Mexico was Mexico
I think Virginia is the worst of the lot, as it was named after Elizabeth the first; the virgin queen.
(definitely wasn’t a virgin)
Its so shameful that Elizabeth I would stole Virginia from Virginia.
God help you when you hit Springfield… or Portland.
I have always wanted to go visit original, or Classic York.
Vanilla York
Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the UK, great place for a spot of Afternoon Tea.
It used to be called Amsterdam.
Not Constantinople
Why did they change it?
