What kind of Apple type phone do they think they’re making?
I was just about to say. This is like a Chinese Apple, but with shitty quality and a negative score in privacy.
Couldn’t have put it in better words.
🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮
It’s actually the same with Huawei phones
For a very privacy leaning site, a whole lot of you have sketchy ass phones that spy on you for basically everything
For a given price range, Xiaomi hardware is probably the best in the world. And MIUI is built to maximise battery life and do more with less RAM and CPU. But this comes at the price of MIUI being very brittle and unable to handle modifications.
On the other hand, Xiaomi has good support for custom ROMs. So you can buy their phones, and immediately switch to a ROM of your choice (at the cost of losing MIUI’s efficiency).
Well, not quite immediately. You have to wait a few weeks for them to unlock your bootloader
72h irc, had a Xiaomi or subbrand of them twice now. Good hardware for the price, just bring your own software.
Right now is almost one month of wait, it’s very infuriating
What phone does not spy on its users out of the box?
PinePhone.
Only trouble is it’s not great at the “phone” part yet.
pinephone
Yeah unfortunately apart from the pinephone and librem which run a full linux distribution, no other phone can say they don’t sell their users’ data
landline?
One where you take it out of the box and install something like graphebe is and calyx is
What phone does not spy on its users out of the box?
iPhone? How can someone just assume and accept the above?
That’s not my phone.
I laughed :D
This is not Xiaomi’s fault, it’s Google’s. It’s the limitation of the gesture navigation in the older Android versions (Android 10 or so). Nothing Xiaomi can do about it on Android 10, even if they wanted. I’m not sure how much better it is these days, but I’ve heard now it can work with 3rd party launchers to some degree.
The same limitation exists on my Xiaomi phone that runs Android 13
This is not Xiaomi’s fault, it’s Google’s
Gestures worked fine on MIUI 11. In the initial A12 update gestures stopped working, but you could at least circumvent it by using 3rd party gestures app like Edge Gestures. Then, a few months later Xiaomi released the update that killed even app gestures. That’s when I said fuck it, and installed a custom ROM, where gestures work with any launchers.
What’s your experience with full screen gestures and custom launchers, Pixel owners?
I’m on a Pixel 6 pro with Android 13 and have tried both Lawnchair and Smart launcher, I personally haven’t had any issues with gesture navigation on either.
Does swiping up to go home collapse the app screen into the app icon? Or does it vanish to nowhere in the middle of the screen?
With smart launcher it disappears into the center. I think you can fix this for lawnchair by using the quickswitch magisk module, but that requires root.
Hunh? Some launchers already have had built-in gestures when Kitkat was still a thing.
why have i never encountered this in any other phone ever?
Have you tried using Android 10 with gesture navigation and 3rd party launchers before? Maybe you just never had this combination of factors. It happens for all smartphone brands, it’s a problem with Android 10 itself.
i have many times actually, i got a nexus 6p which i keep updating and supports at least up to android 11
Buddy, the point being made here is specifically Android 10. I just made a comment on your thread about this exact thing.
At one point in time there was a version of Android that introduced gestures and it broke third party launchers that have gesture options themselves. People were freaking out because they thought Google was going to make Android natively kill 3rd party launchers.
In truth it was a bug with gestures and 3rd party launchers. It had to do with the fact that gestures were new and that version of Androids gestures didn’t disable or have issues with 3rd party gestures interfering with one another.
I get your frustration a lot of people at the time understood your frustration and were worried but newer versions of Android no longer have this issue because the third party launchers can take advantage of the built in 1st party gestures and add their own additional gestures.
Also, Xiaomi is not exactly what I would call an LTS phone if you want longer service for support Pixel and Galaxy (especially Galaxy) are about as good as it gets on Android.
I definitely ran in to this same issue on my old phone running Android 10 ( i think it was either a Nokia or Moto). It is definitely an Android thing rather than a Xiaomi thing
Yes, We have the same problem with samsung phones as well.
There are dozens of launchers on Play Store that work just fine. Is Xiaomi BS 💯
What version of Android did you test them on?
Might be android versions even older than that I think, my FP3 runs Android 10 and I can use fullscreen gesture navigation with my third party launcher (Niagara)
My LG V60 didn’t have this problem. I used Niagara and Nova launcher full time on it.
Don’t use crap CCP phones, and flash a better OS on it.
I don’t.
Oh so you had the CCP phone given to you? Ok. Same applies.
Nope
If you are going to use a xiaomi phone you have to at least put a custom ROM on it.
Am I weird for like MIUI 🥲
You can use MIUI by Xiaomi.eu. It’s a custom rom based on Chinese MIUI.
Chinese MIUI has more features than the other regional roms. Everytime they showcase a new MIUI version most of the features only arrive to the Chinese rom, all other regions get just basic stuff.
Whether you like it or not is not the issue.
The issue is, as with most modern OSs, that the OS itself is chock full of spyware.
They are probably waiting on the unlocking period.
I’m done with Xiaomi. Good hardware but very intrusive software. Just to change the ringtone or the notification sound I have to accept being spied by them. Had to use a 3rd party software to change these. Wallpapers? Nah, accept the terms to be spied on as you use our theme software. I’m done, writing this on a Redmi Note 11 but already ordered a Moto G23 to replace it. Love the screen of the Note 11 but tired of the bullshit push to relinquish control of the device.
Will try the Pixel Experience ROM after I transfer everything to the new phone but I need banking apps working, not much hopeful.
Whem the Fairphone 5 comes out I will buy one. Decided it is time to invest on fair devices.
LineageOS solved this issue for me.
It’s a little outdated model, but on late 2022 I got a brand new Redmi Note 9 Pro (2020) just so I could have a Xiaomi without MIUI cancer. I’m using it right now.
The problem is finding an offically supported model, otherwise you rely on people who post their custom LineageOS roms on forums.
Only difference with a Pixel phone is they won’t ask your permission.
Yeah, but at least it’s just Google, not Google and Xiaomi (and who knows who else…).
Even worse is the Calculator app lmao. I was baffled when I had to sing some terms and Conditions to upload my data in order to use the calculator app.
Banking apps work on Pixel Experience along with Google pay. Writing this from my Mi 9T Pro with PE android 13 installed.
I’m typing this from an unrooted xiaomi phone with lineage for microg where I can use banking apps. The only downside is having to connect to a computer every time I install an update.
Writing this on a Redmi note 10 running pixel experience. Banking apps all work fine. I haven’t had any issues with stuff like that.
Same. On X3 Pro running CrDroid. The lroblem I face is that battery backup is not that good, the launcher’s recent menu is buggy sometimes, and gestures are not great as MIUi. (Like can’t swipe back on Gbaord to close it.)
Otherwise a lot better in every aspect than MIUi. No junk of apps and lot better privacy.
It’s not even good hardware.
I’ve got a Mi 10t Lite, and the camera is useless. It randomly blurs patches of photos when it takes them, especially if you dare to use the zoom
I haven’t encountered an app that doesn’t work after using magisk to hide root acces.
Btw xiaomi.eu ROMs are also a good option next to lineageOS.
I had experienced that on a Vivo phone. The worst device i’ve ever got it. The only advantage is a Snapdragon as a CPU.

As someone who switched from my beloved huawei p30 to a xiaomi 12, I regret my choice so much. Sure, huawei isn’t very open with rooting and bootloaders etc either, but installing a goddamn apk app didn’t take a whole extra minute becuase xiaomi wants me to be absolutely sure that I trust the maker and locks me out of clicking ‘I’m sure’ for 10s. Nor did it constantly try to turn off developer mode. Or turn off my ui customizations that run in the bg. Grrr
Not sure of what brand I’m gonna try next, might try the now independent Honor, or maybe give up and go with samsung, but my next phone will definitely not be a xiaomi
I buy Xiaomi phones purely for the absurd hardware/price quality ratio. Been using the brand since 2015 and I absolutely love it.
However, their software do leave a lot to be desired. Custom roms is what make Xiaomi phones great. I’m so happy with my brand new Poco F5.
That is exactly why I switched to a custom rom (plus the fact that on top of these issues, I was stuck on an outdated version of the OS because my carrier wanted to include it’s crappy apps no one ever used). Imo Xiaomi phones are very good on the hardware side, but the software is horrible to use when you’re used to a near-AOSP OS.
It’s terribly annoying. Since they killed PCmode I dropped my tab and more often on my phone.
i was speechless my GF has a note 10 pro or something and wanted to pimp it up but i had to tell her " i guess you have to choose between the cool gestures or the cool launcher…"
That’s one of the reasons I had for changing to Evolution X rom. Also my battery lifetime doubled (Mi 11)
Would recommend looking into custom roms and rooting if you really want to pimp her phone ;)
yeah that was the idea but i dont think she cares enough to let me unlock it
I’ve dropped MIUI for the stock ROM UI and the Lineage with microg OS …my Poco x3 NFC got great! …until my banking app started blocking non official android systems …
That’s no biggi, look into SafetyNet fix, MagiskHide Props config and Shamiko (they’re all Magisk modules)
Yeah I heard about magisk but I’m not that techy apparently cause I couldn’t get how to install it but I’ll give it another try
Download Magisk from github and just flash it like you did your custom rom. You need to redo this after each rom update/reflashing your recovery. Afterwards open the Magisk app and follow the onscreen instructions (install via root)
Although this method of installing Magisk is not recommended anymore it’s the only one that worked for me. Following the regular instructions always ends in a bootloop/non responsive display for me
Yeah my main fear is to get stucked in a bootloop but I think Ill try flashing it …
I haven’t thought about different launchers for years. What launcher do you want to go to and why?
I use Niagara on my phone. It’s pretty simple and basic. There’s a customizable directory type app listing on the home page and some widgets. No app drawer due to the listing, but there’s a search function that will even find your hidden and disabled apps if you need them.
On my tablet, I use nova (paid), because of the huge variety of features and it works well. I’m probably going to switch soon, due to data concerns, but it’s awesome if you don’t mind that sort of thing.
I use Nova launcher (free edition) and is great, tons of customization!
Recently someone in another thread mentioned Niagara, it’s different but easy to navigate one handed on a large phone.
idk something like nova? or anything worth a fuck really , just not this shit
I got a note 10 pro as well.
First thing I did after I got it was to install LineageOS. It’s so much better.
Custom ROM that shizz
I am using custom roms since 4 years and the issue of third party with universal full gestures of stock android still exists to this day. This is why I use the stock launcher which comes with my custom ROM.
Have you tried PixelUI ?
No I don’t have that ROM supported for my device. I’m currently on ricedroid a13.
This is why I install a custom rom on all of my phones
This isn’t the default for others. In OneUI, for example, you can use a combination of both, even with 3rd party launchers. One-handed mode+, for example, is awesome for gestures.
its definetly the way to go but i havent seen something this outrageous in a while…
its definetly the way to go but i havent seen something this outrageous in a while…
ROM spies on you — I sleep
ROM doesn’t allow gestures with 3rd party launchers — real shit
I LOVE GRAPHENEOS AND OTHER DEGOOGLED SYSTEMS!! I LOVE HAVING (MORE) CONTROL OVER MY DEVICE (WITHOUT ROOTING)
What’s broken:
- caps lock
- you tell me!
I completely agree. You don’t need to shout however :)
:) OKay
Isn’t this a general Android issue?
It was an issue back in Android 10 when google first added gestures to AOSP but it’s since been fixed. Xiaomi, though, only does this to make switching launchers less tempting so that they can have more data about you
Fixed? I am on Android 13 custom ROM and I still have that ghosting effect while accessing recent apps when I use third party launchers.
Not on my Samsung.
Gestures work great on stock android with custom launchers
Nah, I use gestures with Nova Launcher on a stock Pixel.
I’m also on Pixel, what are the advantages you see over the stock launcher?
Not the same person but I’m using Nova on my pixel, for starters icon pack support is a must to me, and then Nova lets me tweak things on a granular level, so I end up with much cleaner looking launcher, no search bar, no scrolling bar, customizable background color, text color etc and that’s just a few advantages it offers.
I’m using full screen gestures on my Pixel 2 with Microsoft launcher
What does full screen gestures do? I’m not 100% sure what that feature is
It means you can swipe or whatever at any part of the screen and it will work, not just hot zones
Pixel doesn’t use stock Android.
i went for a Nothing Phone (1) cause i got tired of bloatware. It’s nice that when you want to do something on your phone it just does it, without shoving an ad down your throat.
thats when you discover a deep sea of android ROMs!
