I think the point is that she’s just a normal women, sharing uncontroversial articles. And there is this other half of the couple you just wonder about how someone could possibly see something in let alone put up with him.

I’m personally reminded of the parents of a childhood acquaintance, with a nice mom and a father that couldn’t even be asked to close the bathroom door when guest were there.

I could never have the opposite politics of my spouse. Sure, we may disagree slightly on some matters an nuance, but a world view in direct conflict with mine would be irreconcilable.

If we’re talking about politics like loudness ordinances and funding for road projects and whether the fire department needs a millage we can share the same values or same values with different priority orders no problem on the different politics.

If we’re talking about whether some people deserve rights or racism or if laws don’t apply to some people then it’s more than a politics difference, it’s a values difference.

When politics felt like shades of policy disagreements I could see it. Now it is either you support democracy and human rights or you’re supporting pedophiles and genocide. Not much common ground anymore.

Most people vote for the pedophiles, though. Either through the ballot or with their wallet. They’re in politics on all sides. They’re in business. They’re on the computer they use every day. The car they drive.

And human rights. Goes out the window the moment somebody has a bad case of the sniffles. Or when brown people can be blamed for pretty much anything and everything.

It’s almost as if, the main problem isn’t the corrupt deranged elite, but the system and boot lickers that uphold them.

My partner is just slightly less left than me and I struggle with it some days. I can’t even imagine trying to date someone on the other side.

Sometimes I think about dating again after so long, and I imagine my girlfriend wanting to wiretap our place with an Alexa in the kitchen.

Seriously I don’t understand how some people can handle their best friend and roommate being a POS

        1. Fear of making near friends / difficulty making the new friends
        2. Actual naivety of thinking the POS behaviour doesn’t matter
        3. Weirdly, peer pressure from other people? For instance you might want to distance yourself from one friend and you are then peer pressured to be in situations with them more often by the other friends, told to build your tolerance of them

        … 1 + 2 also applies to romantic relationships!

Edit: just realised ‘best friend AND roomate’ is just a way of referring to a spouse. But there it is, there’s the low-down in my opinion.

As silly as bonding over race, especially when we disagree on basic morality, but that’s sadly what happens. 😔

I’m so glad my parents and brother have (nearly) the same politics as me. Having to regularly deal with trumpers (without being able to laugh in their faces as with my co-workers) would be a perpetual torment. My brother did have an inexplicable phase of loving Putin, but that passed quickly.

A lot of religious folks “don’t believe in divorce.” So even if the relationship isn’t abusive, they may be incompatible as a couple but just stick with it.

Yeah, I once talked with a woman who spent several decades being married to a guy who was physically and emotionally abusive to her, but made it clear that she would never leave him because she had promised to stay with him for live at her wedding, but it was okay because things would be better in heaven for her anyway, but not so good for him.

          It made me really sad…

I think he means his sister reads salon and his husband is racist and also his husband and his sister are in a relationship too, it’s a classic polycule isotope.

He was poking fun at the framing. It should have been “my sister and her husband”

“My sister and husband” has the same grammatical framing as “my friend and classmate”. It denotes the same person.
